Why Gravity is NOT a Force

The General Theory of Relativity tells us gravity is not a force, gravitational fields don't exist. Objects tend to move on straight paths through curved spacetime. Thanks to Caséta by Lutron for sponsoring this video. Find out more at: www.lutron.com/veritasium

  • Here's a question I've seen a lot in comments: OK, I'm accelerating up but then shouldn't someone on the other side of the globe fall off? No, here's why: Either watch again from 8:28 or read what I've written below... Spacetime is curved - it curves the opposite direction on the other side of the Earth. Neither us on this side of the Earth nor they on the other side are changing our spacial coordinates - we're not moving up, they're not moving down - Earth isn't flying into one of us. BUT we both ARE accelerating. In curved spacetime you have to accelerate just to remain stationary. The traditional definition of acceleration is something changing its velocity. In general relativity you have to embrace a new definition of acceleration: it means deviating from a geodesic - not going on a straight line path through spacetime. Near the Earth a geodesic is a parabola so unless you're moving in a parabolic arc (like on a zero-g plane) you are accelerating. This definition is the same as the old one so if you're accelerating in deep space then your velocity is changing. *BUT*... if you are near a large mass you are in curved spacetime, now acceleration your velocity is changing. You can stay stationary relative to Earth's surface and still be accelerating. This is because your acceleration should be measured not relative to the Earth's surface but relative to free-falling objects - they are inertial observers. Imagine this - I'm in deep space and I make horizontal rows and rows of stationary golf balls. Then I hop in my rocket and accelerate up through them. Just think about what that looks like. Now my rocket is back on Earth just sitting there. I freeze time for a sec and make horizontal rows and rows of golf balls up into the atmosphere. Now unfreeze time. What do you see? If you just look at the golf balls and the rocket ship it looks the same as the situation in space where the golf balls were stationary and the rocket was accelerating. Einstein's point was the golf balls have the better claim as the "stationary" thing since their experience is just like the golf balls in deep space - no forces experienced. The rocket on Earth is just like the rocket in space. It feels a force and hence an acceleration.

  • There are a few problems with this argument. Anyhow, it was recently announced that gravity does exist. And it's not because we are moving through space-time. There are no particles or 'gravitrons' as once thought, but gravity is a WAVE. It's that simple. They found evidence of this and it was all published recently. A photo was taken in deep space where they actually got a photo which showed that Gravity is a wave. I think it was about 2 years ago now. This is what an American Scientist told us back in the late 1980s, Robert Lazar said that Gravity is a wave, and there are two kinds of gravity, A and B. Now all accepted by Science. He also said that the US government has Alien Spaceships in storage, and that they use gravity propulsion systems. It's all classified above Top Secret. They are so compartmentalized in their structure that the scientists have made almost no progress in over 50 years of study. He also mentioned they use Moscovium ( AKA Ununpentium) as a power energy and gravity source, and that he worked with it. I showed this data to scientists 30 years ago and they laughed at it, and said it does not exist. It's NOW on the Periodic table. Lazar was right , and he was not lying. He had inside information which was years ahead of even todays standard understanding of physics.

  • as much thought and effort went into this, I feel as though you found some college student's hypothesis on a master's degree... I wouldn't pass the student based on your interpretation or presentation. Gravity is a force, in the same manner as magnetism is a force. gravity is merely the atomic magnetic field where magnets are... magnets. I mass is a congregation of molecules and atoms, each with their own field, as the fields collide they draw upon each other, binding, growing, the "mass" of the field never changes, but rather (like fluid) shifts to the remaining empty space, as matter gets denser, the field gets squished outwards; drawing in more matter. It is only when you leave the pool of gravitational force that your own matter's field is stabilized around yourself. think of a drop of water on the surface of a coin, now drop that coin into a test tube of water, the water in the tube will rise from the addition of the matter "the coin" and the water that was on the coin. if you were to draw the coin out of the water, maintaining an ideal surface, you would draw out the matter, and the water, still tensioned on the surface of the coin. Gravity is a force, it is an atomic bonding force. Just because the coin still feels water on the surface as it falls to the bottom of the vial, the same as it would sitting suspended in the air, doesn't change the fact that it has water. What this video discusses is merely the relative equalization of inertia, where the gravitational force matches the force your own body emits.

  • Ok if we are accelerating upwards through space time on the surface of the earth where is the ewnergy for this acceleration through space time coming from?

    Joseph PomavilleJoseph Pomaville8 tuntia sitten
  • So, an inertial observer feels weightless and can have "things" in her frame of reference, as can someone who's not an inertial observer. The inertial observer feels weightless because they are moving through Spacetime (or even staying still?) at a constant velocity (and thus no acceleration). Constant velocity means there's a vector / direction which is a straight line in their inertial observer view. Now two things can happen: 1) Effect visible to external observer, no effect on person in the rocket: No large mass bodies around, so travel continues in a straight line (non Geodesic?). A large mass object is around, impacting Spacetime, such that the inertial observer travelling through that affected Spacetime still feels no change. It still feels like they are still moving in a straight line (and feels no acceleration in any direction), but appears curved to an external observer (which now would be a Geodesic?). 2) Effect visible to external observer, and an effect on person in the rocket: Force is applied to the rocket, causing acceleration, thus causing a deviation from the inertial observer's view of a straight line, and loss of a sense of weightlessness, and they can thus feel the change to their course. This means a deviation from the straight line Geodesic. A couple of questions: 1) If there's theoretically no large mass bodies around (or any other mass) then is the trajectory still a Geodesic? Is that a silly question, since there's mass everywhere that the trajectory is always a Geodesic? 2) Is it possible to not be moving, and be "still"? Or is that also a silly question, since there will always be "movement" relative to something, and it depends on what the reference is?

    Noel RobertsNoel Roberts8 tuntia sitten
    • Both questions are rather intuitive. The definition of a geodesic is just a name for a trajectory/path. And second, applying force (e.g. acceleration) to an object will change its trajectory. The latter question is simply answered by another. By what frame of reference would qualify something as non-moving/still? Motion itself is always relative, as it genuinely has no meaning if it cannot be compared to anything else.
