  • Robertson for the Calder!!!

  • Hockey Guy, your acceptance on the Simmonds fight goes only as far as to when the ref DIDN'T call an instigator penalty. If this is "the code", and EVERYONE knew that this was premeditated (and it OBVIOUSLY was; nothing on the play led to Simmonds being angry at Edler), then WHY, WHY, WHY IN HELL isn't the instigator penalty called? Go ahead and have your "code", hockey players... but ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES of your stupid, childish, f'ing "code"! But no... This is a classic case of wanting their cake, and eat it too. I call UNMITIGATED B.S. on this one.

  • I hope these allegations arent true, but more so I hope the truth comes to light and the guilty party is punished accordingly. These king if things aren't to be taken lightly. As a hockey fan, I like to think these players I look up to wouldn't be capable of said accusations, but the truth is that just because they're professional athletes and we sometimes like to out them on a pedestal, sometimes we dont know someone as much as we like to think. Kane went through this a few years back and was proven innocent, but the accusation alone permanently blemished his legacy. I hope this accusation isnt following the dangerous trend of false allegations that's been happening recently, but I also hope it's not true. I'm torn.

  • Guilty or not, I think we've seen the very last of Jake Virtanen as a member of the Canucks. I was someone who was willing to give him the time, and I thought last year seemed like a big step for him. Sadly, I just don't think he has the correct wiring to be a pro athlete. His hockey IQ is definitely lacking, his effort is often lacking, and this isn't the first time Jake has been viewed as a bit of a reckless party boy. Issues on the ice, and now the issues are popping up off the ice. Van needs to separate themselves from this and cut ties. I don't really see the downside of him going at this point.

    • In Jim Benning We Trust!

      jimbodicedjimbodiced5 päivää sitten
    • *Wrong. Benning loves this type of player. He will double down and give him a contract extension, expansion protection and 1st line minutes. 5 points in 38 games is elite talent. Power forwards take longer to develop. He is better than Dal Colle, Ehlers and Nylander because he is more physical and better in the playoffs. The rape accusations are ridiculous. Even if they are true, it only proves how aggressive Virtanen can be on and off the ice. He is the type of player Vancouver needs. 3.5 million for 4 years to lock Jake up long term. Let's do it Jim Benning.*

  • Maybe J.V is innocent, maybe he’s not. Either way, there’s a few things to keep in mind: 1) she went to the police. Very few victims ever will, so that’s brave of her. Especially when the other party is a celebrity. 2) most D.A.s will not try sex crime cases unless it’s a complete slam dunk of a case. Which means 90+ percent of predators end up going free. 3) if there was no criminal case, she is likely suing him civilly. That takes time. I’m not Canadian, so I’m not sure how that goes on there/the process. 4) Coming out four years after a sexual assault is fast. A very long period of time would not be unexpected since it takes a long time for the brain to understand that kind of trauma. But some people can come to terms with it sooner than others. Whatever happens, people need to wait before they cast aspersions on either party. Until there is a definitive conclusion, it is all speculation.

    Mark KrudaMark Kruda7 päivää sitten
    • It went public after the victim saw from an anonymous Instagram account, that other women had similar experiences. Thats what blew this wide open. In addition there are plenty of other reasons why it takes 4 years to do something. It took me four years to sue a former employer. You can't just go out and do this shit willy nilly if you don't know what you're doing

  • The hockey code is so outdated. Just because no one got hurt during the fight, doesn't mean they wont in the future and every little fight could add up into all kinds of issues later. He got suspended that should be the end of it. There does not need to be some kind of show fight just because they always did. Not to mention it was Simmonds who is definitely a bit out of Elders league.

  • And it's kinda weird how they don't come out with these stories until the guy becomes pretty well known. Draws a bit of concern for me.

Unbias Bruins FanUnbias Bruins Fan7 päivää sitten
    • Maybe it has to do with the person being "pretty well known" (aka not known whatsoever beyond dedicated hockey fans) since he became an adult. Out of all times to make accusations, why would they do it when the person is fairly disliked within the fanbase and is on his way out of down basically as soon as possible? Your comment simply perplexes me as it is simply untrue regardless of the outcome of the accusation.

    • sometimes it can be too hard to convict someone for these things even if the victim is telling the absolute truth. So, my guess is that she’s hoping other victims, or witnesses, come forward with potentially better evidence. Or she hopes that the pressure and attention will cause Jake to confess, which is unlikely but possible. To be honest, if Jake didn’t do it this shouldn’t turn into a bigger thing, however, if he did do it, the woman and the canucks have both done the right thing in my opinion.

There's some amount of cruel, sadistic greed going on when the sponsors are pressuring him to continue to play when he feels that his best days have been and gone. Still, looking at the stats for the season, he's done pretty well out there.

Also, people need to stop crying about the Simmonds/Edler fight. It had to happen. I am a Canucks' fan but Edler sticking his leg out on Hyman was bush league. He had to answer the call, and it doesn't matter who the Leafs send for him. They sent their toughest guy to make sure the message was sent that you don't pop your leg out on a guy. It was one fight. Code was honored. Lets move on.

To me it seems like the guy just loves to play hockey and is still in good enough shape physically and mentally to do so at a Euro-Pro level. So nothing's as clear as you're saying it is, if you could point me in the direction of anything showing him being unusually sluggish and/or dangerous on the ice, or anything where he's clearly stating he doesn't want to play anymore or that he's only playing cause he has to or something along those lines. Then I'd happily take a look at it. Without that, we're both just interpreting.

  • Its 3 and a half years later. No proof will be found, nothing will happen except Virtanens reputation will be crumbled. Teach your children, boys or girls, to defend themselves. To go to the cops right away, to talk to you right away. We live in a world where if you keep the hurt to yourself and dont talk about it, you wont be listened to. You wont be believed. You'll be deemed inconvenient. Don't teach your children to close their eyes and just take it. teach them to fight back and refuse to be a victim.

    Thierry BRThierry BR7 päivää sitten
    • @Thierry BR sorry yes I mispoke, I meant to say men or women to not be predators. And yes I agree with your reply, it's just that your original comment came across as if you were blaming the victims for not fighting back or coming forward when that is not always possible

      Lara MorrisonLara Morrison7 päivää sitten
    • @Lara Morrison no, its about teaching predators both men and women not to be predators. And we havent been doing a good job at that clearly. There is a difference between blaming victims for not comming forward amd encouraging them do to so. I just couldnt stand the thought of anyone sitting on their fear for years.. and then coming forward to no avail. Wevebkust seen so many examples by now of the powers that be just sweeping cases under the rug for being too old (essentially). Maybe the reason there are so many predators is because so many get away. I wont encourage people to be silent, and I especially think we need to teech our next generations fhat its ok that fight back in any way they can. At least until we can get to that world were predators are no more.

      Thierry BRThierry BR7 päivää sitten
    • It is incredibly difficult to prove sexual assault, that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Given his history, I would be very surprised if it wasn't true sadly. Also this is incredibly victim blaming, not all victims feel capable of going to the police right away due to trauma, just because it happened 3 years ago doesn't make it any less of a serious accusation. It shouldn't be about teaching children to fight back, it should be about teaching men to respect women and not be sexual predators.

      Lara MorrisonLara Morrison7 päivää sitten
  • Like with Alomar and Virtenen, the accusation must be from years ago, now manifest. Is it money for the "victims?" Have you heard of statute of limitation? Accuse them at the time so memory is fresh. How can we take "victims" seriously from 2 years ago?

So I'm starting to think of what someone told me at Walmart (who complimented my Chara shirt). But I'm not one to start rumors and such unless I hear it from a credible source.

    • Idk why Chara isn’t wearing it. He looked fine last game but it’s the coach’s decision. When I first saw the blue caps jersey I decided I’m going to get a Wilson one once Cool Hockey starts carrying them, so now I’ll definitely add the “A” to it as well. Again, I think Chara should wear it as a defenseman and all but I’m not complaining.

    • @Darth Vader Yes and I agree with you that is how it should go but we do not live in a society that does that rather in these cases victim blaming sets in and it plays a major factor in why so many dont report by saying always believe the victim it allows more women and victims to come forward and from there hopefully the justice system prevails but getting women to report is a major problem and victim blaming is major reason why

      AhmedAhmed7 päivää sitten
    • @Ahmed and I don't like victim blaming, but again your asking for a standard that can lead down a slippery slope. During any time someone is being accused, we shouldn't presume anyone is guilty, we should wait for all the facts and evidence to come up and then make a determination whether the accused is guilty or not. I bet you wouldn't be saying this if you were the one being accused of a crime.

      Darth VaderDarth Vader7 päivää sitten
    • @Darth Vader Again the percentage of those falsely accused are far less than what people think our society has a serious problem with victim blaming and yes believing in the victim may be problematic for those very few instances of there being a false accusation but it is the first big step towards ending victim blaming

    • @Gl 1100 that's objectively false and relies on a simplistic understanding of a legal system as infalliable - which even most court operatives would disagree with. I'm not even saying he's guilty right now there really isn't enough info for any unrelated member of the public to make but saying that a court's decision is the only factor when deciphering truth is fundamentally anti-illectual and contrarian to any fact based reasoning not mention the entire purpose of judiciary law.

It's very unlikely any serious charge will be made considering the charges were made over 3 years ago but that doesn't mean he definitively isn't guilty. I haven't made up my mind on this one yet but given the history and known behaviour of virtanen coupled with the verified fact that less than 6 percent of public sexual misconduct allegations are false - the odds are definitely not in his favour. Although this odds of him walking free without a charge are definitely in his favour

This isn’t “cancel culture” you moron, it’s simply looking out for your organization. If the claims are unfounded, okay, he is still paid his full contract. If the claims are founded, then they didn’t let a rapist work for their organization. To use the factory example again, how would female coworkers feel working with someone accused? Especially if the accusations are true, and still had to work with him. Got a sister, daughter or girlfriend? How would you feel if they had to work with a guy who is being investigated for sexual assault? Wouldn’t it be better to put him on leave and let the police investigate, just to make sure?

Give him a contract extension, expansion protection and 1st line minutes. Let's do it Jim Benning!! Go Canucks Go!*
