Taking apart the RX 6800 XT reference design isn't difficult and, to AMD's advantage, we didn't encounter any glue. That said, it's also not an impressive design, and perhaps explains why the card runs up above the 100-degree range with an overclock.

Hi. I absolutely do not get why 14:29 is "extremely inefficient"? To me it looks like they cool two different parts of the GPU with two different plates. The plate that you took off there didn't have to be in there, correct? It seems to me like they did that to increase the surface area. Can you please try to improve the solution? Maybe I'm not understanding properly what the problem even is.
Blatant Nvidia shilling and ragging on AMD, nitpicking.
Can you make the background more colorful? The background color is too dark and too monotone.
@Franck Kerisit Yeah, I get an anti-AMD vibe in his videos although he's usually very fair and straight to the point which is I why I watch them to begin with. Still.... there's that anti-AMD vibe lingering in the background.
@Orion Pleiades You didn't review the video did you? He explains why there is no need for it.
6900xt does not have thermal pad in the back too
is the PCB same as the 6900xt and will the same waterblock fit for both of them?
My reference 6800XT fans are toast already, FML
LoL you are rough on those G-cards. Great video. Be Blessed
Hey Tech Jesus, I found out that getting a GPU triple fan cooler underneath the GPU brought the temperatures down a bit. I'm too nervous to apply my own thermal pads atm
I thought it was a little strange because you say you don't have a thermalpad on the blackplate but here I have a RX 6800 Sapphire reference model and the blackplate is so hot when the plate reaches 70º that you can fry an egg ... Can you tell me why????? I suspect my card has thermalpads
So it looks like there is no easy way to deshroud without a complete tear down?
Thank you for the tear downs. I watched the 3080 FE and was hoping this might be even easier. However, as I would like to put a third party cooler on the GPU, I think the 3080 FE looks like the easiest option of the two as the FE uses paste. In a few months when I'm panicking, I'll be sure to come back to your vids.
No good, better Sapphire
I'm guessing that intermediate plate was a compromise in manufacturing: less costly fabrication than one solid assembly and flexibility to modify the design.
Steve looks genuinely happy in teardown videos.
So if the spacing is similar to vega64 does that mean one can use, say a kracken g12 to add a third party cooler to the card?
I like buildzoid's analysis vids
Did you guys get a chance to go back with working calipers and see what the actual hole spacing is? Wondering since I have a universal block I would like to use.
Backplate thermal pad is important especially for pcb and vrams
Thank you so much! I just got in the Ekwb and was so afraid to dig into this.
Hello, thanks for the informative video. Is the card compatible with the nzxt g12 bracket ? Any way we can get a video to install a custom AIO ?
samsung memory, thankfully
horrizontal heat sink fins exhausting heat directly in to the case... ... .. .. no sir .. i dont like it...
Lets be clear, we come here for the thoroughness of the testing not specifically to see Steve Burke and all his opinions/quirks.
this pcb super nice using Infineon XDPE132G5D VRM 16 pahse controller and 12 Vcore phase TDA21472 70A mosfet for total 840A... different from the 6800 non XT using omega mosfet AOZ5470QE
Local man bending laws of nature by pulling off the stickers and saying" it wasn't there".
A teardown with no dremel is always a good one. Thanks for making these! Do you really need to remove the entire cooler assembly to gain access to the fans? That's a weird and cumbersome solution!
is that a Nazi simbol when the fans spin
I want to see you do a crazy overclock with this and compare it to the 3080 like you did with the 10600k and the 5600x CPU's. I also really want to see how the 6800XT OC results change when SAM is active vs not, as I suspect it will increase the overclocking gains significantly
Cool! Thanks for this video! You can also check my channel to see my latest video!
Can you Tear Down an M1 Mac Mini? I'd like to know if the SoC's on chip SSD, which is offered as a single 256 GB drive or a SIBGLE 512 GB drive is configurable in BIOS or OS as 2x SSDs, with their own read write speed & buffer if the 512 GB SSD is simply a single SSD. THANKS. I like to keep my OS & Apps on drive C: and all my media, project files, etc on drive D: to allow Apps to use both drive's read write speeds and buffers.
hopefully, the partner cards will improve the supply but oh Radeon you still know how to fuck shit up
Tbh im pretty happy with the direction theyre going. Yes this is not some not current state-of-the-art design, but it has decent finstack and end results are not bad. Both camps have finally killed shitty turbine designs, lets cheer! For comparison the finstack in my 1080ti founders is like 1/3 of that in video. Small surface area means that single turbine needs high rpm to keep up and the noise is unbearable even with no overclock. I know older amd reference designs had similar issues.
That looked like a PS5 case on that bench.
what if you put the XT cooler on the vanilla 6800🤔
It's just "not bad" ... I really expected more
Radeon 5000s looks like Nvidia 1000s Radeon 6000s looks like Nvidia 2000s Radeon 7000s looks like Nvidia 3000s
C'mon, you are tearing them down and we don't even have a chance to buy them yet 😂🤣😂🤣
The cooler design makes me want to buy a Nivida for sure. I don't like the vertical cooling, when airflow in my case is linear.
/thud lol
Out of the following which one seems to have better Air flow stock or not I plan to use 2x memory sticks from Patriot Viper 16*2 totalling in 32 GB Going to be using CPU Air Cooler DeepCool Neptwin (DP-MCH6-NT-A4RGB) My main concern is the Air flow & thermals. H500 Cooler Master Stock Cooler Master NR 600 + 1 fan Cooler Master TD 500 Stock I wish we had access to sheet so I wouldn't bother you.
Am I the only one thinking that cards (at least this one) look better without the backplate? I'm a huge fan of seeing the components.
I just hate the way this backplate looks tbh
Try pay a little respect to the hardware man, i love your content and really apreciate your opinion but watching you run over an expensive GPU with another expensive GPU and throwing around these cards leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth.
What the hell kinda test is that ?? " Well if you turn the card upside down and apply 5 POUNDS of force it MIGHT touch the cooler fins" Yeh quality tip there. It's the same for my car. If I set it on fire it stops ! Who knew !!
9:02 “there’s nothing screwy” as he’s in the process of removing 100 screws
Sad tat consumers cant even see one to buy and yet others are getting them free and tearing them apart. Saw some YT tech guys vid and he has two walls of boxed GPUs. Sigh.
Interesting. I'm still going to wait for 3080Ti to see what happens in the market. NVenc has become very important to my home setup and the AMD equivalent is light years behind.
Would i be able to spray paint the shroud and backplate white with something like Plasti Dip?
Regarding the fans touching the heatsink...they'll be upside down, pushing away from the fins 95% of the time in 95% of builds until pci gen 4 hits riser cables. Non-issue.
I just want you to know I love your sense of humor, Steve. When you knocked over the 6800xt, I laughed really hard.
so do you guys think it's a good idea to remplace the pad for paste with more mounting pressure ( 1mm spacers on the 4 corners ? )
Are cpu thermals significantly affected by warm gpu air being circulated within the case, compared to other cards that push it out the back? You know, through those hole things that nvidia invented..
just waterblocked my zotac 3090 trinity with the new ek vector, the stock thermal pads were utter garbage that fell apart upon the slightest touch..thankfully ek supplies pads and you dont need the stock ones unless you have to return it...
ERm. The conclusion was not a conclusion?! :D
What about Nvenc, in terms of Streaming?
no glue🤣😂
when the mission is to find glue... but glue aren't always bad :D
Is it possible to remove the red piece to paint it?
I also really wanna know this... if it can be painted or vinyl wrapped and the RGB wires can be programmed to change the color of the Radeon logo, you can make this match any case theme you want...
The back of that socket looks more like chain mail than a piece of hardware.
Why is it called vapour chamber ? Why vapour ? I sure hope it doesn't vaporize. That would reduce the heat but... just no xD
will u do this with sapphire card too?
Too big? Too fat
The prizes here in the NL EU are to high in the stores, the rx6800xt are 1000 euros the rx6800 are 800 euros the rtx 3090 cost here 1800 euros the rtx 3080 cost 900 euros and the rtx 3070 cost here 700 euros, but sometimes 2 are 3 in stock... mostley there are is nothing to buy here.....😭😷
Conclusion: „Everybody is pretty exhausted, 👋 goodbye.“ 😂
I just want a white one for my black and white build
I would buy your set of screwdrivers if they were much smaller and had spinners on top! Those are HUGE for small electronics repair lol
Radeon: a day late and a dollar short.
MADE IN CHINA.. NOT BUYING IT
LongNaviᵀᴹ
the good: 3 fans, 2x8pins, tall vertical fins, backplate, PCB looks good, leaf spring plates prevents loss of spring screws, the bad janky fan headers return, awful midplate, too many screws, need to take off the IO plate to get the cooler off, no heatpipe, lacks proper TIM i cant wait for AIB big Navi cards taking out io shields to get to coolers is shit and i already ripped one of those awful fan headers off a vega56 between no heatpipes and no TIM i expect this model to perform much worse then a typical AIB model despite AMD ditching garbage Blower style coolers
You need to make a GN Glueless Seal of Approval!
2:50 - Look how cool Steve is. The entire world wants these cards, and he gets them for free and then disrespects them on camera.
Better MLCC's on the back, better Pcaps on the front, better pwrchip, an extra input power filtering circuit to lowers powerspikes to the PSU and longer lasting high quality thermal pads.. AMD definitely used way more expensive and better components than Nvidia.
Wow he smacked the 6800xt down with that Rtx 2080fe
So what he did at 4:20 how much would it cost to put those thermal pads? I mean not for AMD but if a normal buyer would like to do something like that...
Is the die on the pad notably better than other commercially available thermal pads? Why is it hard to just buy? I assume there'd be a reasonable market for it
I was lucky enough to get a 6800XT day 1 but since I have seen the teardown and first benchs (RT and DLSS) I have put it on ebay and bought a 3080. My x570 chipset and my Ryzen 5800x are sad but I don't care.
that is a nice ass refence card i gotta say however no one can ever buy this card at retail value Newegg eBay and amazon sells them at triple the price just like a 1080 5 year old card still cant find a refence card for under a grand its ripping people off
so the thermal pad in this card sucks ?
you can sell a thermal pad at the size and shape of the card, just for perfection or may be funds raising too.
teat down should be stock and price good luck with that
HI ALL BEST PRICE FOR ALL NEW CARDS IS ebay lol AMD rx6800 £1500 you should go for it hehe have fun you all
If he shaved his head, he would be a young Marlon Brando. He should stuff cotton in his cheeks and call himself the "ModFather"
absolutely no point in these videos, you cant actually buy them.
A bloodbath for AMD 🔥🤬🤬🤬🔥 DirectX DX12 Ultimate & DXR 'realtime' RayTracing is the future !!! "Class Action Lawsuit" incoming / class actions against AMD RDNA2 will come - the miserable AMD RT performance belong in the AMD PR slides !!! uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a33aae79596c7790e41db0e581cb2afc9cbe12b12a8cfecfaf16f451a86c648c.jpg
Woah Steve what are you doing throwing those GPUS like that? Are you out of your mind? That is outrageous, you might damage the sacred GN Modmat with a sharp fin or something!
american logic; if its smaller, just add a zero; european logic, lets give te smallest bit number 0 and then gradually go up.
Approved by Gamers Nexus: 6800 XT no glue edition
1:34 when the fans spin they create lift so they never get close to the fins
its a shame AMD couldnt beat Nvidia this time round but they havent been closer in 11 years this is big
Before watching, I'm betting on "that's a problem" popping up at least once
can you remove the fan shroud without having to remove the heatsink? so that we can clean the dust easily?
Easily within 24 hours oof
you can sell your skins on Bitskins and get rich /: bitskins.com/?ref_alias=SXKDbAZ8Dlo
Shill
In regards to your criticism of the baseplate design, is there any benefit from dumping all the mosfet heat into the vapour chamber if you can get away with keeping them within operating temps by using the baseplate as a giant heat spreader? That way the vapour chamber has more cooling capacity for the GPU and VRAM, which are connected directly to the vapour chamber. I assume the two thermal pads that connect the baseplate to the vapour chamber are there to assist the cooling of the mosfets on that side of the board because there is less metal in the baseplate on that side of the board. Or am I missing something in regards to the importance of mosfet cooling?
HELP THE PRICING FOR ALL THE NEW AMD GPUS and CPUS IS VERY HIGH NOT EVEN CLOSE !! i can't buy anything even if they resolve the problems of availability So we need you condemn this actes (their source!!) we need amd to take actions agaist this huge probleme I can wait for availibility but we need the pricing to go down Otherwise am not buying anything !!!!!! RYZEN 9 5900X is listing for 1100 euro on amazon !!!!! or 850 dollars oon other websites rx 6800 xt is listing for 800 euro 850 dollars OMG THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE

Hold on isn't NVidia using Samsung memory modules too! (micron)? why is there not more memory options available from different manufacturers for these boards Maybe that's why there is none of any of them not even Xbox or ps5 left!!!!!!!!! arrrrg.
Why did AMD choose to make the I/O panel solid, which blocks the heat from escaping out the rear of the case, which seems like a bad choice because of the heat building up inside the case concerns me?
PCI-e 4.0 M.2 drive: Am I a joke to you? * heavy sweating *
Dislike for not sub spanish
"You can remove it and pretend it was never there" needed a dead pan stare directly into the camera.
