Reasons Why the Jets Should and Shouldn't Trade Laine

This is a really complicated matter once you get into his contract status and the ongoing flat salary cap league wide.

  • Detroit would be a good fit. Yzerman is NOT going to settle for losing season after losing season. They have money. They are young. And they could build around him. Laine gets to become the face of that team and gets paid. Sure, Detroit will suck for a couple more years but they are starting to turn it around. For the record, id LOVE to see this guy paired w Tarasenko on that 2nd line of the Blues

  • The Habs could make that trade and have longed for a big shooter. The habs always have great passers but a small weak shooting team. The Habs have over spent on several very low end players but I think they have outs and can work a Laine into the budget.

  • Laine's whole problem has been once you get off the top line, numbers will fall and that is a given.if he plays the entire year with Mark his numbers will be very good.As soon as there appeared to be a rift between Laine and the coach he was demoted and given less ice time, less powerplay time and removed from the top line. Here is my prediction,if Laine played the entire year with Mark he gets 50+ goals.

  • Jets fan here. This is the best metaphor I've seen from another Jets fan on Twitter. "Many say Laine is far too talented to deal, and the team should do everything in their power to accommodate him. If you've ever watched a six-month old child lose its fucking mind trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, sometimes you have to realize it just won't work. It can be the prettiest, most fantastic, perfect peg in the entire world. If it doesn't fit, it just doesn't fit. I don't want him to be traded, but at the end of the day, I realize his attributes (and more-so his faults) may not necessarily mesh with what the club wants." He's an incredible talent, and I want him to work, but he's always been a liability...That's why he can't be trusted on the top line. That's why for years (excluding last obviously) he's been babysat by Brian Little, who is was one of the Jets most responsible defensive forwards...who was constantly having to bail Laine out.

I a Rangers fan...we prob have the goods to get a deal done ...but we don't need any more wingers... Unless we deal DeAngelo, Buchnevich and 2021 1st. That's probably the most of part with...but we need a Center.... Laine could really be a huge add for a contender

  • For the sake of argument let's assume there is fire behind all this smoke. Here is what I don't get in the comments about Laine. Why exactly is he not supposed to ask for a bigger role? Hockey is a career for these players. Anyone who's tried to build a career should understand this. He believes he has the talent to be a first line (or line 1b) star player. What he should be doing is asking for that responsibility and the management should either give him that if he's ready and there is a slot open or work with him on a plan to get him there. If he doesn't see the slot being open in the time scale he's looking for or the team giving him the tools to succeed, he should look for a trade to a situation that allows him to use and develop his skills as far as they can go. Managers in every industry deal with this and I don't see why hockey should be any different. To us regular fans it may seem like the players should be happy just to be in the league, but these guys are as good as they are precisely because that's not enough for them. If the Jets have to trade Laine, it won't all be on him and there should be some serious internal discussions about talent management in the organisation. The Trouba negotiations didn't go well either and if I remember correctly role and usage were a part of his gripes as well. Even if family ended up being the final reason he left Winnipeg. The last thing the Jets should want is a repeat of the Trouba situation with Laine. If there's any truth to these rumors about the relationship souring, the Jets are well and truly screwed. No one will pay fair value for him in the trade market with all the uncertainty and he wont sign long term in Winnipeg let alone for the kind of money they seem to be willing to offer. He'll go through arbitration for short term contracts and the Jets will either trade him for next to nothing or lose him for nothing.

  • There are still people that think he is possibly a 60 goal player. I am not convinced he ever will get to 50. The drive & attitude are simply not there. Raw talent yes but not the intangibles that will create that consistency to be a 50 goal guy like everyone seems to think he will be every year does not appear to be there. He will probably demand 9 or more and he simply isn't that right now. The potential to be that guy is there but he isn't there and especially on a likely shortened season you can't really evaluate this year that effectively. Unless he completely goes in the tank and only has 15 goals in 40 games or however many they get this year.

  • The hard choice is the obvious. You have to trade Wheeler. No matter how painful it is for the short term. He is the-by far- oldest of the FW group, he gets the most money and its only a matter of time before he deteriorates making him immovable and forced to loose someone younger and more valuable. Plus you'll never be able to assemble quality depth on the defence. They were always bound to make this trade, ever since they picked Laine in the draft. Having Wheeler in front of him has already cost in his development and you are that close to loosing him for nothing.

  • 100% media driven story. Wheeler's on his way out in a couple years, Laine will get his payday and stick around and be paired with Scheif and a good centre for years. In no way would trading Laine make the team better. Look at Pionk, you can find undervalued defencemen than can turn it around. You can't do that with elite goal scoring.

They might need to do some tweaks to get to the 23 man roster and be under the ceiling this season, but next season, the Jets will have quite a bit of cap space, so they can re-sign him towards the end of next season before free agency, and have room to improve the defense.

  • Didn’t the Jets bring in Paul Stastny to play between Laine and Ehlers? Seems like a trade is going backwards in a hurry. Also with such uncertainty in cap for a couple seasons it makes Laine a difficult guy to trade for. Would a smart GM give up 2 firsts and a top 4 D for a guy who demands 10m in a flat cap year? Gut feeling says he stays in WPG. Then the fur ball starts with his contract negotiation next off season. All this talk sounds like agents setting themselves up for a big pay raise. Hopefully, a great season with Stastny keeps him there. Man, I would hate to see him walk. I agree with your comment about playing on a second line not a big deal.

    Brian HallettBrian HallettUukausi sitten
  • Maybe Sakic could pull yet another rabbit out of the hat for this one... Let me try to elaborate; Burakovsky plays left wing on the second line. That’s your top 6 forward. Burakovsky is no Laine, but let’s just say the trade is a two for one like Shannon suggested. That would balance it out. Sakic could always throw in a draft pick as well. They already have plans to bump Nichuskin down to the 3rd line and move Kadri to the RW, in order to make room for Newhook to step in and play 2nd line Center. He seems to be a highly anticipated arrival. Laine could take the 2nd line LW spot by moving Burakovsky out. I know it will be same situation for Laine but it would only be for one season, unless Bednar decides to put Lande on the 2nd line if they were to acquire Laine. We’ll come back to Lande and Laine in just a moment. Then they could trade Cole as the sweetener top 4 Dman. They have Bowen Bryan, who is yet another highly anticipated arrival. So it’s not like they would be losing a top 4 four defenseman without being able to fill the void. Moving those two, Burakovsky and Cole, would shed 9.15M in cap. So money wouldn’t be an issue there. But just take a second to think about the potential... Not to mention, from what was circulating in the trade rumors, it seems like Sakic is willing to make a big move. There were rumors about CO trying to go in on Hall, but hot damn, could you imagine injecting Laine into their lineup!? Circling back, another thing to consider is that Landeskog will be UFA after this season. I know he is the captain, and I know he has been one of those beloved franchise figures for CO. But!!! If Sakic were smart, and doesn’t play into the sentimental side of negotiations with his athletes, then he could just let Landeskog walk next off season. In that scenario, Laine would jump up to play left wing on that 1st line with MacKinnon and Rantenen as a permanent fixture. Now I’m certain ownership, coaching staff, management, and every Aves fan would miss Landeskog dearly, and admittedly, it would be odd to see Landeskog sign else and wear another jersey. Once again: BUT!!! I’m sure that the sour taste would be washed away quickly with the prospect of a Laine-MacKinnon-Rantenen line taking to the ice to wreak havoc on the rest of the league. It’s not like we haven’t already seen players any hockey fan would have never guessed would switch teams, switch teams. This is the climate we’re in now. Landeskog is 27 years old, which isn’t old, but you have to plan for the future. You can’t simultaneously keep the gang together AND continue to stay competitive. Laine is 22 years old. Without a doubt, playing alongside those two, the results would be explosive. Also, this would be a win for Laine as well, because he would be exactly where he wants to be: Playing first line minutes with two star players on a highly competitive team. As for the second line, you would keep Nichuskin, but move him to the left. Insert Newhook at Center, and keep Kadri, but move him to the right. And as for the logistics, The projected cap hit for the 20-21 season is 74.1M. The projected cap hit for the 21-22 season is 51M. However, having replaced Burakovsky’s and Cole’s combined 9.15M with Laine’s 7 would effectively make it 48.85M for 21-22. That is plenty of wiggle room to sign Laine to an extension without feeling crunched to make sure there’s enough left over to sign Makar as well, as he will be going RFA and will most definitely, and most deservedly, command a marked raise. The C could be passed off to MacKinnon and I think everyone would be fine with that. Let’s just say that they, Makar and Laine, both sign to 10M each. The Aves would still be at 68.85M in cap hit going into NEXT offseason. Other RFA’s RIGHT NOW, 20-21, are Jost ($885,833 current cap hit), Toews ($700,000 current cap hit), Kyle Burroughs and Miska hunter (both depth pieces) and I would think that Vladislav doesn’t get qualified. The other notable UFAS right now are: No one. Now, as for next off season we already discussed Laine and Makar both being hefty contracts and where they will be at after having signed said contracts. Aside from those two they will also have to address: Forwards: Landeskog - (UFA) let’s just say he walks Saad - (UFA) ??? Calvert - (UFA) ??? Bellemare - (UFA) ??? Not going get into the all the non roster forwards, however, Grubauer will be UFA and they’ll have to carefully weigh a decision on what they’ll want to do with goaltending. They also have another highly anticipated defenseman in Timmins going RFA, but he only makes $925,000 currently. So, without much NHL experience he won’t be a nightmare to qualify. For 22-23 they’ll have a tricky situation with Kadri because he’ll go RFA and his qualifying offer will be a little dicey given his current cap hit is 4.5M. And then there will also be Nichuskin and Francouz to deal with, but both will be UFA. It’s completely possible that most, if not all, of the aforementioned free agents part ways with the Avalanche, with the exception of the goaltenders (barring trades.) So Grubauer, Francouz, maybe Miska and Werner (both depth goaltenders [19-20 RFA at $700K current cap hit, and 20-21 RFA at $883K current cap hit respectively]), Kadri, Nichuskin, Timmins and possibly Bellemare will be tricky to sign because they have MacKinnon going UFA after 23-24, and they’ll have Byram going RFA as well. They’ll have 12.65M to work with. But this will not be an insurmountable task. Sakic has young players on ELC’s who are expected to be NHL ready. For instance: Beaucage (LW/RW), Bowers (C), Byram (D), Kaut (RW), Newhook (C), and Timmins (D [RFA next offseason.]) If they hit, which from all appearances it seems as if they will. Then that will help a great deal in saving cap space. Of course I know I didn’t address what to do with the 3rd and 4th lines and the 3rd D-pairing, but that just goes to show how difficult being a GM really is. There’s also the 2021 Seattle Expansion Draft which kinda throws a wrench in everything. Maybe they could sign Lande for the purpose of exposing him? But that’s a huge dice roll which runs the risk of him not being picked. Although, if exposed, I doubt he would get passed over. I’m not even an aves fan. But all of this information is readily available. This post took a lot of time to craft. I hope somebody sees it...

  • i disagree with the premise that jets would necessarily want a top 6 in return. They have one of the best forward groups in the league (even without laine). A guy like roslovic could easily slip into a top 6 wing role (it would honestly help their development.) I think if the jets trade laine it would either be entirely for futures or for an elite caliber d man

    JacobJacobUukausi sitten
    • @Dang Doge their top 6 is scheifele, ehlers, Connor, stastny, laine, and wheeler. Wheeler and stastny are the only two players above 30. Scheifele is the only one above 25. The rest are below 25 that’s not “old”. IF they do trade laine (which I’m not saying they necessarily should) it’s WAY more crucial to get a solid d man as part of the package than top 6 forward. Their offence didn’t hold them back this year.

Granted he's usually being set up to be the shooter but there's this misconception that he's only recently started developing his playmaking skill and i'm telling you people it's TOTAL BULLSHIT. He's made some miraculous passes previous to this past season. The guy has the hand-eye coordination to put the puck where he wants to; shooting OR passing regardless. STOP SAYING that he doesn't pass the puck. JUST STOP. Watch the damn games, like i do, so that you can have the required knowledge to understand wtf you're talking about. • Either way jets are screwed. Trade him now poor return due to covid money loss. Trade him when his contract running out, teams will low ball unless its a sign and trade. Either way they won't get full value. Its also clear from what his agent saying. He doesn't want to be a jet unless he gets 1st line minutes. This will be used against the jets in trade talks. They should of dealt him last season.

  • If they trade Laine guaranteed they won't be have a goal scorer of his caliber for the next decade. This kid could be Ovechkin light if given an organization that treats him as its centerpiece but right now they're treating him like a spoiled brat who happens to be one of the best goal scorers in the game.

  • Con for trading Laine: it's a stupid idea. Pro for trading Laine: he's inviting the stupid. I honestly can't see any real possibility of the Jets trading Laine until Cheveldayoff, Maurice, and ownership all agree the stupidness surrounding Laine is worse than the stupidness of trading Laine.

  • Personally, I like the idea of trading Laine for a Bottom 6 forward and a top 4 Defensemen and a solid pic like a 2nd or 3rd. And then go get Hoffman

    Allyn GrahamAllyn GrahamUukausi sitten
  • It seems the elephant in the room is what management thinks about his "locker room presence " and desire to stay with Jets . He played much more rounded team game and improved . Hoffman is interesting , but has long ago hit his ceiling . Maybe the biggest problem will be Wheeler's contract next year (value wise ) I don't think Laine trade will yield anything close to fair results in flat cap era . Laine @ 6.75 (and 7.5 next year )is much better deal than Hall @ 8 million . I can't see giving up on young talent in this flat cap era . If Jets offer 7.5 anyone offer sheeting him would give up at least premium picks .

  • The Laine rumours are very akin to the Boeser rumours: both have passionate Canadian markets that eat garbage journalism for 3 meals a day surrounding two players who, originally known for their goal scoring, have decided to take a more rounded approach to their most recent seasons.

  • Looking at the comments... Patrik Laine UPSIDE 50% / DOWNSIDE 50%... He has to pick it up and stop floating when things are tough?

  • 99 percent of the trades being proposed in the comments here are sports talk radio awful and worthy of seventh place fantasy league owners.

  • Good scoring wingers are often supported by great centremen, examples include Bossy who had Trottier, Shutt who had Lamaire, Simmer with Dionne, on and on the list goes. Laine was at best in the 2016 World Championship Tournament as an 18 year old. He ended winning the Tournament MVP with many NHL established players performing for their national teams. While established NHLers Koivu and Barkov were on that Finnish team roster it was a young smallish centreman who was Laine's setup man: Sebastien Aho. Put Laine on a pairing with Aho and Teravainen (both with the Canes) and watch out NHL. I am in favor of having Laine stay with the Jets and find a centreman to complement him. Unfortunately, at this time, Scheifele isn't a great complement for Laine, they're both shooters. Maybe Perfetti is the guy, we can only hope. Go Jets.

    • Very well said. I'd love to see Laine in Canes with Aho & Teuvo.
