Lobdell taught Psychology at Pierce College in Washington State for 40 years. During Lobdell's career, he has taught tens of thousands of students and he wants students to succeed. • This video has literally changed my life! Thank you so much! It's been 6 weeks since I've started following much of this advice and it works so well, I still can't believe it. I still like to use highlighters when reading a textbooks because I like to be active when studying (writing is much more my cup of tea than reading) but I have now started to re-read all sentences that I marked as important after having marked them and it works really well. Also the little study lamp trick is wonderful! I can't walk away from my desk when taking a short break because it'll take me like half an hour until I sit down again since I easily get distracted, but I turn off my lamp when taking a short break, turn the chair around and play a short game on my phone while having a timer for when to return to work. Also, since I've started taking short breaks whenever I feel tired I can go three times as long as when I started without getting tired. This is so cool! For the first time in my life studying has turned into a positive experience for me :)

    • I wrote some notes while watching this for the first time and copy-pasted someone else comments and added more to it. 00:15 - 1) Study break -When you're ready to study and start to feel that moment you're wasting your time. Note the time and write it down. -Typical time is 25-30 minutes -Woman decided to study 6 hours a day 6pm to midnight 5 times a week and failed every class. By the time she hit 630 she stopped studying effectively and the longer she studying the less reinforced it was. -Positive and negative reinforcement, once you passed 30 minutes you start to hate studying and get bored thus stopping the effectiveness. - It only takes 5 minutes to recharge. Study for 30 minutes then take a break for 5 minutes and do something you enjoy, listen to music have fun playing a game, enjoy somethign to reinforce positive vibes to studying. 07:50 - 2 Reward system - When you're done studying always reward yourself with something big. Treat yourself. to reinforce the memory. 10:19 - 3) Dedicated study area (Behavior Reinforcement) -Studying in the bedroom will make you get bored after a bit and make you sleepy wanting to sleep. Sirens calling you from bed to take a nap. The primary function of the bedroom is to sleep. -The primary function of the dining table/kitchen. Is eating. -The primary function of the living room. Social/tv/games -When asking you a direct question in a classroom setting you don't raise your hand. You answer right away because of behavior training. If he were to ask the whole class everyone would raise their hand but social cues with direct questions make you answer right away. Because we are behaviourally reinforced to do so. Without knowing it. -Take a lamp, write a sign on it that says Study lamp. And use it only for studying; only when you turn it on. The moment you start to lose your edge while studying(5-10-20-25-30 minutes later), turn off your lamp get up and walk away. -Break it up into small chunks and reinforce it, create a study area. 19:49 - 4) Rote memorization vs. Active learning -The more active you are in your learning the more effective. That doesn't mean to keep reading it over and over or saying it over and over; Rote Memorization. Why you memorize and then forget later. - The way to learn efficiently; Is it a concept or a fact? A fact is a discreet little piece of information. Sigmund Freud is the father of psychoanalysis - Fact Understanding what psychoanalysis is a concept. Understanding the name of a bone is a fact. Understand what it does in the body is a concept. - If you know the concept you can always look up the fact after. Concepts are what make you effective at studying. - Can you put the concept in your own words? If you can't then you don't really understand it. It's not meaningful to you. Not making it meaningful is a struggle which is a waste of study time. Example; sequence of letters APPYH HURSDAYT without writing it down say them back in the same sequence you won't remember them. Now try HAPPY THURSDAY Same letters but associated with something you will never forget the sequence of letters. -Students were asked to remember words such as giraffe and elephant there was a list of 30 words one study group had to count the vowels of each word. the others had to associate the animal. -Short term memory only lasts about 20 to 30 seconds - Afterward, those who counted the vowels only remember 5/30 words. Those who associated the animal remembered 10/30. Twice as many. 32:49 - 5) Study groups -Performance skyrockets in study groups. Can help each other with concepts. Learning tricks and tips etc. 33:58 - 6) Highlighting books (Recognition vs. Recollection) -When you highlight the lines in a book you don't actually remember when you go back to your lines you only recognize it. 36:37 - 7) Remembering (Recollection) ---- -You need to know the concept of the highlighted part of the book. If you can go back and reword it in your own concept and words. That's when you will remember it and not just recognize it. Memorizing the line doesn't help to learn. 36:57 - 8) Sleeping (REM Sleep) - You can undo your good studying by not sleeping well. There is evidence for this. If you don't get REM it will not become permanent. Better sleep stores permanent memories. 39:09 - 9) Taking notes -Notes are vital -The first moment after class you should sit down on your notes and expand on everything you jotted down to give it depth and flush out the useless information. If you wait till later on it's guaranteed you will forget some of your notes/concepts attached to it. Give yourself a heads up so you can recollect it and remember it by going over your notes right away -If you forget a concept or don't understand it on one of your notes after class, ask someone in your class. Or even ask your teacher to go over it and give you more examples. 41:20 - 10) Active Recitation - The best way to learn is to teach someone. If you can't teach someone, teach yourself in your mirror empty chair etc. It reinforces your learning. If the person you're telling doesn't understand the concept and they ask you and you don't know then you don't understand the concept and should try to learn it again. To reinforce your learning. -Writing it out in your own words helps as well. - 80% of your study time is best reciting and 20% reading 43:22 - 11) Study from books (SQ3R = Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) -Go through the chapter look at the pictures beforehand. Raise questions on what you are looking through and reading by Surveying the chapter. This will cause you to look for answers. -Before a test should be review only. If you study early and apply the above principles you will be reviewing and learning instead of cramming and trying to memorize. 47:42 - 12) Mnemonics (Acronyms, Coin Sayings, Interactive Images) - Easier then rote memorization and help more. Sayings : Righty tighty lefty loosey Interactive image is best of all Protein 4 calories Carbs 4 calories Fat 9 calories Car-Bo-Hy-drates 4 syllables or Car, Cars have 4 wheels ` Pro(tein) Car(bs) Pro-Car drivers ride 4 wheels Fat Cat has 9 lives The weirder the better for images.

  • I thought my life had nothing to offer anymore because life became meaningless to me because I had HERPES virus, the symptoms became very severe and bold and made my family run from and abandoned me so they won't get infected. I gave up everything, my hope, dreams, vision and job because the doctor told me there's no cure. I consumed so many drugs but they never cured me but hid the symptoms inside me making it worse. I was doing some research online someday when I came across testimonies of some people of how TRADO MEDICAL DOCTOR PAUL ODUKU cured them from HERPES virus, I never believed at first and thought it was a joke but later decided to contact him on the details provided and when I messaged him we talked and he sent me his herbal medicine and told me to go for a test after 21 days. Within 21 days of medication the symptoms disappeared and when I went for a test Lo and behold I was NEGATIVE by the Doctor Who tested me earlier. Thank you DR PAUL ODUKU because I forever owe you my life and I'll keep on telling the world about you. If you are going through same situation worry no more and contact DR PAUL ODUKU via odukuherbalremedies@gmail.com or through his WhatsApp +2349064430408 facebook.com/Herpes-Eraser-102292594719987/

  • I don't think his college sweetheart is married to him today... shit my wife was working on her B.A. in a second language after graduating and trust me those daily 6 hrs we split together and you know what that earned me at midnight everyday? Daily Bro. She graduated with 4.0 earning her Bachelors in Economic Studies because I made damned sure every 10 minutes I set mental bookmarks in her language for her to recollect at least for a few months. I was not even interested in economics but I audited all of her classes as I had graduated the year we met so that following year as I was available to be her tutor, note taker, and so much more that we agreed we live together and we rented an apartment together. We were those two years study monsters.. those years were history and her student Visa ended. 7 years later we were married as a result of having the ability to learn using love instead of controlled substances. It's amazing how much you can learn when you are lucky enough to find a compatible partner equally as exited to study you back!

  • I summarised a guys summary: - 30 min study sessions with 5 min breaks - no music except certain study music - special desk/ room for studying/working - learn concepts before facts (be able to explain things in your own words) - take notes - teach another person - use mnemonics - for textbooks: -- feel free to move to different chapters- it's not a novel -- for each chapter: see images, main points and questions -- write down questions in the book -- read bold words, titles, names, main ideas and marked text -- read first and last sentence of each paragraph -- read the whole book -- try to answer questions -- reread the book and answer questions you couldn't before -- reread with a marker and pencil -- answer questions, come up with your own for the main topics -- write an essay for topics that a child could understand

  • The crypto market in recent times has been on a bullish move like never before and that is a positive one for all investors. I started trading some few months back but it wasnt a jolly ride as many would make it out to be, although i had assistance from experts and online classes. I have tried trading in the past on my own but i wasn't getting much positive results due to my inexperience in trading, not until i stumbled on a comment on youtube about James Carlson, I took the chance and contacted him through the details i found under the comment and he has been my guide and coach ever since. He has taught me much about trading and i have made much improvement in my trades since meeting him and following his advice. Let's keep spreading the word to enable the naive and inexperienced investors out there to use this bullish move. he can be reached on WhatsApp (+447476717980 ) and Telegram (@jamesC51)

And when I say that I don't understand a single thing they just say "you have nothing to do just study it's not that's hard " and at this point I'm just too tired

    • Don't let anyone tell you that it does not pay to study hard and long! In college, getting an average of four hours sleep per night, I used to study 8 hours a night, Monday through Friday (not even counting class time five days a week, late afternoon study, and all-day Sunday study). On Saturdays I rested. I graduated with a 3.5 + average, finally earning a total of over 220 units. (I wanted to learn. I wanted to know. It was just something deep inside of me.) I would get all "A's" in classes of my major (foreign language and English) and "A's" and "B's" in my core classes. In Biology (not my major), I had the highest grade in the entire 101 Section (out of a total 254 university students). In my senior year, I made the Deans List. My IQ, measured after graduating, was 134. You never know what you can do until you (1) determine to do it, and (2) work uncompromisingly to accomplish it. (3) It also helps to enjoy academia, your chosen major, and to look enthusiastically forward to entering into and excelling in your chosen career field (That's an understatement). Don't try to become a "round peg in a square hole" just because the "squares" may earn more money. Be true to who you are! (And please remember that not everyone NEEDS to go to college! For some it's a waste. For others it doesn't suit who they are and what their dreams are.) Furthermore, as you progress and see your efforts paying off, you will grow in confidence and ability. Desire, Focus, Non-compromising Effort, Self-sacrifice, and Growing Confidence are the secret. Being a "sports jock" in high school with no desire to excel scholastically, I maintained (sometimes barely) a "C" average for four years. What a waste of four years! To succeed in college, you will need that high school foundation--especially in "reading, writing, and arithmetic" (the basics). If you don't get it in high school, you will find it will limit your career-choices later until, one way or another, you go about getting it for yourself. The time that will take you to accomplish will slow you down!

  • Study for 25 min and take a break of 5 to refresh and regain the peek again. Search for concepts instead of facts, so they will click easier. Take notes during stuff, but read them right after so you will not forget and get yourself recognizing stuff instead of understanding stuff. Teach other people what you just study, so you can learn with yourself. Interacting images are the best for you to remember details. Picturing odd stuff on your head, linked to the information you wanna retain, is the way to go...

  • Some other tips I can provide as a life long reader/learner/studier: Not everyones the same intellectually and behaviorally of course. Some may grasp concepts faster than others, take time, extra time if need be. Some may have to work harder at learning than others, effort is essential- dont give up! People are ideally fitted to learn thru different mediums ie- reading, listening, lecture, talking, windows presentation, etc. Learn what medium best works for you. Certain times of day are ideal for learning. Some maybe morning, others afternoon or evening/night. Learn until you understand a concept completely, not superficially, not rote memorization. Some concepts may take more time than others, difficult ones take more time and be patient. Understanding a concept you should be able to recite from memory (its committed to long term memory. The ability of learning itself gets easier the more you know. Its like building a muscle. So keep at it! Also: Many books today sadly have a political agenda (generally liberal left leaning), look for good books w/o an agenda (in certain subjects), minimal to no editorializing, question everything. Many authors purposely distort facts to impress an agenda. Good books are worth their weight in gold. Learning by doing is better than just reading about it.

Go to Amazon Books and search for Marty Lobdell, Study Less, Study Smart. Also available in Kindel format. Thanks, Marty Lobdell

  • I have a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering and MBA from an elite university. I attended night school for 7 years for my two graduate degrees. I used to study at my desk at home and always put on classical music at very low volume. It was relaxing and helped me concentrate. I took study breaks every 3-4 hours and over the years I developed intense concentration on what I was doing. Before the mid-terms and finals, I used to go over all of the reading and notes and problem sets 10-12 times and the day before and of the exams, I would take vacation days at work to study and turn off my work projects. I used to have to study and/or write papers all weekend on many occasions because I was working 60 hours a week while attending school. My methods worked and will work for anyone. People have to bear down and really concentrate. I had a friend in grad school that was a really outstanding student and I asked him what he did to prepare. He said whenever he thought he was ready for a test - he studied even more and went into minute detail. I tried his methods and he was 100% right. Mechanical Engineering is one of the most difficult majors one can undertake and the competition is stiff. If one doesn't study hard, he/she will not make it. One can sit at his desk and look at a single problem for the entire weekend and not be able to solve it. But when the professor goes over th solution in class, the "lightbulb" goes on. This would not be possible without staring at the problem and trying dozens of attempts to solve it.

  • About the study lamp students getting a grade point higher on average: correlation does not imply causation. A more motivated student would probably be more eager to try out the lamp idea than a non-motivated student.
