The robot arm I used:
Please consider supporting these projects through my patreon:
When I was offered the opportunity to beta test an upcoming robotic arm from Tormach, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. CNC chainsaws baybeeeeee. Aside from being fundamentally awesome, it is a very interesting software problem. Since I didn't have to build the arm I was able to focus the project and the video on the software challenges of making something like this work. Thank goodness I didn't have to build the arm because the software almost killed me. I can imagine all kinds of next steps for this creation like machining textures with the chainsaw or cutting topiaries. I hope you like it!

Other great things (your purchase helps support this channel):
* I use a glowforge pro for rapid prototyping and it's great. You can $500 off a Glowforge pro here:

  • Hope you enjoy this robot as much as I do 🙂. A big thanks to everyone who helps to make these projects possible through their patreon support. If you'd like to help me make more projects like this (and get more behind the scenes content, an AWESOME discord, livestreams, etc) check out

  • He should just use the Chinese method of problem solving. Step one: Find a company or person who already found a solution to this problem. Step two: Hack said company or person and steal their solution. Step three: Use the stolen solution and pass it off as your own. Step four: Deny that you stole any solution or that you're killing off an ethnic minority living in your country. This is similar to the Russian method of problem solving. Except you poison all of your political rivals instead of killing off ethnic minorities. Secretly you're doing that too but no one yet

  • As a 5 axis CNC machinist this makes my head hurt. The chainsaw has what they call safety chain. If you grind away the safety kickers , but not the actual depth gauge/rakers you can plunge cut with it just fine. You can also twist the saw in the cut like a screwdriver to make a bowl shape as long as you are taking a very very shallow cut.

  • Now being cnc programer once upon a time i know there is software for your robot arm. You need only to describe a tool (chainsaw) and graphicly describe in software what to do. P. S. Cut only with a tip - less Teath in wood less resistance.

  • The tooth on the chainsaw chain you referred to is not 'an anti-kick-back' tooth, it is the guide tooth. It sets the depth the cutting tooth bites into the wood. Chainsaw cutting teeth are more like lots of little wood planes taking shavings, alternating side to side. The guide teeth are like the base of wood plane, and are set at certain cutting depths for different woods, hard or soft wood. Also, as the cutting teeth wear or are sharpened down, the guide teeth have to be filed to keep the cutting depth correct. You are lucky you did not get into a position where the teeth on the chainsaw tip dug-in due to the guide teeth not setting the cutting depth. (Check out some of the videos on here of chainsaw wheels on grinders). The extreme turn of a chainsaw bar tip renders the guide tooth useless for the brief time the chain goes around the tip. That's what kick back is, the teeth digging into the wood more like a chisel than a wood plane. Once the tooth has dug into the wood so far, the chain motion then sends the chainsaw in the opposite direction. If this had happened while you were cutting the wooden block, you may have damaged your robot arm.

  • What a great idea. I think the best way to make the path file, would be to create a virtual log, and a virtual chainsaw, and then carve it out first virtually, saving each "good" cut to the path file. This could be done even better by having an actual wood carver help you create this file. Doing it this way, you would be able to better mimic actual wood carvers who first carve large pieces off the initial log before going to carving details, it looked like you were going for the details too early. This is a wicked cool project and I would love to see more work done on it.

  • Robot technician here. Nearly all commercial robots come with default joint/stroke limits that prevent the robot from overextending and contacting itself. Some take that a step further and include the option to customize those limits to protect your end of arm tool. I'm not familiar with this brand, but I'm sure a quick google search or flipping thru the manual should point you in the right direction.
