  • This will turn out to be a 15th overall pick by the Leafs. He is a player who has been around the game since he started playing it. He has the ability to make really good scores to help his team beat the game. He owns his own ice skates. Source: National Bureau of Scouting and Agriculture.

  • It will be different players same story for the leafs. I’ve been a leaf fan forever. Maybe they should pick a different emblem like an oak leaf or poplar leaf. Help me please I want a Toronto Stanley cup hat before I leave this planet. I’ll say it again Maybe this year will be better. 😟 dee dee DEFENCE !

  • If the leafs were looking to get bigger, harder to play against, and get a Russian, who could possibly contribute for them on the cheap next season, they should have traded down, got an extra pick or two, then drafted Egor Sokolov. A player who i think will end up being the steal of the draft. He plays the exact physical style in front of the net, and along the walls that the leafs need on lines 3/4. He also has a beauty shot, so he could have the potential to slot into the 2nd PP group at some point. I still think the Leafs need to trade Nylander and Marner if they’re ever going to really get harder to play against. You simply can’t have a bunch of munchkins dominating your top 6. They need some grit up there too!

They didn't have a draft combine and all the medicals this summer like they usually would, so most of the height and weights listed are from the beginning of the year

  • Boston always has a top Dman and Tampa may have the best in the game now ...Ottawa got the best one in this draft and already have Chabot...Maybe Ottawa is approaching the rebuild a little smarter than the Leafs. How will Leaf fans feel if Melnyk's dig at our rebuild turns out to be true? Melnyk was quick to take a jab at how the Leafs have allocated their salaries. "They're going to have a tough time winning the Stanley Cup without defense," Melnyk said, "because they're hitting the cap, they can't bring anybody new in so they're stuck, and that's where you have to be extremely careful. ... They collapse their team, say we gotta do a rebuild, but you know, mistakes were made and somebody forgot about defense."

  • My pick would have been 4. Braden Schneider, Brandon (WHL) NHL Central Scouting: No. 9 (North American skaters) A RIGHT-handed shot and two-way player capable of playing the power play and penalty kill with great competitiveness and smarts, he's a more physically developed prospect and Finishes Checks with AUTHORITY in all areas of the ice. Schneider (6-2, 202) scored 42 points (seven goals, 35 assists), including 20 power-play points (two goals, 18 assists), and was plus-9 in 60 games. Sound like what Dubas was describing but he can't help himself Defence is the hardest position to trade for and yet Burkie says take the best player... How often do you hear teams filling that dman spot with a trade ...not too often You better draft them if you want them in my opinion and disagree with Burkie...if Dman and forward are equal take the Dman because their are a boatload of forwards to pick from

    Rich SwayzeRich Swayze3 kuukautta sitten
    • damn too bad there arent any top 4 defencemen available in free agency that the leafs couldve signed this offseason to help immediately unlike a low ceiling draft pick that may make the team in 3-4 years..... thats really too bad.

Im not thinking he plays on the Leafs next year but eventually you have him to fill a need at some point. To trade for a Dman like Hamilton is gonna be a huge price.

    D MD M3 kuukautta sitten
  • Until the Leafs understand they need a balanced roster with a mix of defense, offense, skill AND toughness they will go nowhere. Right now they have offense and skill and severely lack defense and toughness. Can’t win like that.

  • My biggest issue with this and Dubas is how he doesn't understand prospect age over development. Without going into tons of detail, there will be players from this draft, who aren't "the guy's", helping their NHL team before and at a younger age than Amirov.

  • I don't think Leafs fans expected a prospect like Schneider or Guhle to jump in this year to help us.....however adding one of those 2 and adding to a solid future D would have been nice....if Sandin and Liljegren end up being the future once guys like Muzzin and Reilly either become to old or 2 expensive how how would it have been to add a Schneider to our current 2 young prospects.....i think we all expected Dubas to make this team tougher and improve the D by trade or free agency this year

    Richard FitzsimmonsRichard Fitzsimmons3 kuukautta sitten
  • You don't draft size and toughness. You can address that via trades and free agency. Skill is the typically the hardest and most expensive quality to sign or trade for. That's why drafting the best player available or drafting skill is not a bad strategy. Remember when Brian Burke drafted Tyler Biggs 22nd overall in 2011 and Dave Nonis took Freddy Gauthier 21st in 2013? How have those worked out? Gauthier was not tendered today and Tyler Biggs played ZERO games in the show. It doesn't matter which strategy any Maple Leaf GM uses on draft day, Leafs fans will always find a reason to complain. Size and toughness will come. But drafting it in 2020 does not help the team in 2021.

  • Full props to Burke for selecting Reilly. If they can get Reilly a dance partner with anger management issues, is good getting the puck out of the defensive zone, and skates like a loaf of bread then Reilly will win the Norris. Not going to lie - I was hoping Toronto was going to draft Braden Schneider. That kid could have been the first pick overall.

    David HennesseyDavid Hennessey3 kuukautta sitten
    • @Chris just to add the NY Post Sports section highlighted the Braden Schneider pick as the steal of the draft. NY got the best offensive player and the best pure defensive player. He reminds me of Jeff Beukeboom. Oddly enough he was drafted at the same spot Beukeboom was drafted. If I was a betting man I'd bet that this kid gets a taste of the action in NY. He won't win the calder as they usually give it away to the hotsh*t goal scorers but it wouldn't surprise me to have a positive plus/minus on a pisspoor Rangers club in the 2nd year of a rebuild.

The Leafs have drafted 2 defensemen over 6 feet in the last 3 drafts in the top 3 rounds, and they traded Sean Durzi to the kings. That leaves Eemelie Rasanan as our only 6'+ defender in our development system that was a top 90 pick

  • For the people who haven't been able to watch, the summary of the video is this: - While Steve will be mad if the Leafs don't address their immediate needs before the 12th (namely a partner for Rielly and more grit), the draft is probably not the best way to do that for the upcoming season. - Amirov's stats can be misleading because he played at several different levels last year, including World Juniors. He had just a couple of points in the KHL, but when he played players his own age he lit them up. He also has 5 points in 10 games so far this year, against the big boys in Russia. Not bad for a teenager who turned 19 last week. - There's a cool highlight that's been shared all over Twitter of a player pulling off a Svetch-style lacrosse goal. That was Amirov. - Amirov is eligible to come over to North America as soon as 2021-22, which is sooner than it might've been for a KHL player. - Viktor Kozlov is one of the coaches developing Amirov. His agent is also Dan Milstein, who represents a few Leafs players already. Less entertaining than Steve, but there's all your info.

He is a really good skater and he can also do some sniping but most importantly for the leafs he is a great defensive forward that can transition the puck out of the zone and will eventually be a very good penalty killer.

Our physical size and defensive needs will be done through the FA's. you didn't realistically think that with the 15th pick we'd get someone that would be able to walk into the Leafs and make an impactful mistakeless debut?.

    Cody DoucetCody Doucet3 kuukautta sitten
  • Not to knock the pick..I'm sure the guy is good but its puzzling to me why they never took a defenceman. Defensman are supposed to be hot commodities. There were 3 there that maybe gems. Remember Erik Karlsson was picked at 15 in 2008. Good to stock pile. Is there evidence to suggest this guy is the next Kucherov? No matter who they got none of them would be NHL ready. Interesting to see what others teams thought the best player at 15 was. The guy sounds like he's a good player though

But with this pick, it really keeps things open in the future. He could fill up their back lines and be an active provider in years to come. Or even trading prospects this high up in the draft is another good asset to have.
