I hope this video helped you as much as the on ice session helped me.. I know I have a lot to work on but I will be getting some more ice time with Nick so if you have a question for him, comment below and be sure to follow Nick on Instagram here: instagram.com/dahanhockey. Also if you want a TPSH goalie face mask hit that like button so I know if I should make some!
Masks are now available here: tpshstore.com/facemask
@The Puck Stops Here thank you as always
@Fernando Gomez they are called Blaze Pods and they are more for reaction time then memory but super awesome!
Can you ask him what the name of the lights he uses for those memory drills. My daughter and I could both use that. Thanks keep up the great work
@Mark Lockwood nice! And yeah I don’t think it’s the glove, it I really think it’s just how I’m trying to catch a it. Once I get that sorted I’ll be good to go 👍
Love it, work hard, pay hard
Thanks for your videos man, as a guy who's been playing in net for 3 years, I really appreciate the content you publish.
Great video Sam! It was really helpful to me personally with my glove. Your rebounds were completely under control today.
Yeah, I feel like the more I work with Nick the better I’ll be at controlling those rebounds and just stopping the play after the first shot. I’m glad the video helped you too!
Hey man, new to hockey and new to goalie here. It would be really helpful if you made a, "So, You Want To Be A Goalie," series where you cover some of the more basic and beginner goalie aspects, including like, off ice training and drills and what not. It could start at the new/beginner level and work up to intermediate and eventually advanced! Thanks for the vids man been enjoying them!
This is something Nick and I have been talking about so stay tuned and turn on that notification bell so you don't miss it when we do
do the mask order pls
They are now available here: tpshstore.com/facemask
How do I work on popping up from butterfly faster?
That's a great question, I will have to ask him about that one.
looking at your final comment, you definitively need to follow Goalie Training Pro TV, Maria Mountain is, in my opinion the best on off ice training for goalies. fistream.info/stream/2WShVFdfP7drPc-iDgpssA.html
thank you for sharing that ice session! its great info!
No problem!
hey. great video. one thing you're doing in that first drill is you're catching the ball with the palm of your hand, and that's not where the basquet part of your glove is, you're teaching yourself to catch the ball with the palm of the glove where the puck bounces off really quick. every time you do a hand eye coordination to improve your goalie glove skills...use your goalie glove and catch the ball with the net of the glove. check this video fistream.info/work/videot/qqlljtqVl3WvuHE
I have just started watching your videos and I love them!! In fact it’s inspiring me to creat my own channel. I play roller pick up hockey for fun, havent made the ice switch yet. But watching this video alone and learning to put my glove further out has helped me out so much! Tuesday night I had 32 shots on and only let 4 in. Love the videos and content!
Hey Eric, that is awesome. Luckily the position is the same regardless if you are on ice or roller minus a few of the technical details since sliding is a bit harder on roller. But keep it up and I hope my past and future content will help you even more! Thanks for watching :)
Hey. It’s me remember me? It was like two years ago but I used to be named Bd. Lyle. I’m pretty sure. Your channel has progressed so much in the past two years and so have you. As long as you keep working you’ll make it to the big leagues. I remember when I was watching you at 10 yrs old and commenting dumb stuff but now I’m 13 and it’s insane how much you’ve grown! Keep up the good work.
Hey yes, I remember! And yeah, I feel like I have been learning a lot over the years! Good to have you back :)
Fitness and endurance is key. You can know what to do in any circumstance, but if your body won't get there efficiently you'll leave a hole, fail to focus correctly etc. Speaking from experience.
100% agree. I think that is my biggest obstacle right now. Yes I am learning the technique but if I am to tired to apply it, then it doesn't matter. But it's funny, if I focus on the technique more, I work less which preserves energy. So it also has to do with making the technique subconscious so you do it naturally when in a game.
7:30 Aspect or small detail of what he isn't telling you the reason for this is if you bring your glove or blocker back you are twisting your body. So the 90 or 180 save does have it place but not in a controlled manner when the save should be made at 45 to keep you squared for the next shot should a rebound come off. This difference between when I played as we made save at 90 so that we directed the puck to the corners more. This is trapping or controlled game style. Great review at the end and a lot of truths. This is why the work off the ice in the gym, dry land and video time are more important today to understand the small details that can really drive you game forward. Understanding is only half the battle but getting body to be able to put the understanding to work is the other half; not to mention understanding when to throw the book away. Good Video and Good Goalie coach from what I seen from this video.
You are 100% right and he did explain this when we were doing the warmup outside, I just didn't want to make the video so long but you are right. And I agree about the body being able to do it is just as important as understanding what to do. I am glad you enjoyed the video!
I like his catching tips. My new thing to try this week to improve.
That's awesome to hear.
Buy a sparx. That's what I did. Got sick of people not knowing how to sharpen goalie skates the right way.
love the brown pads
@The Puck Stops Here agreed, I would totally get some if I had the money haha
Me too! They match everything and not enough goalies rock them!
I love your videos. I'm 17 and just started playing goal. Your videos help a lot! Also, a mask sounds pretty cool I would get one
That's awesome, it is never to late to start and cool, I will let you know about the masks soon :)
What’s with the chirp on brown pads!!?? Haha i love the vintage looking gear.
I just bought a full set of custom tan g5 warriors. Those who don't like vintage pads are crazy. They look way better.
I don't know haha, I love my pads too!
I like that he held you accountable and didn’t just ignore or let go of something he saw. Phenomenal coach.
I agree, it is easy to just move on from something if someone is not getting it, but I liked tat he actually cared about me doing everything correctly.
this coach is great
Yeah, he was very helpful!
Great job, I notice towards the end of the video when t-pushing, you were looking at the crease and then the shooter. I would try either just looking at the shooter and t-push to him, or have markers like the blue line, face off dot, or red line to check you angle
@The Puck Stops Here keep up the great work!
That’s great advice. I think I was just try to not fall over at that point because I was exhausted. But I do agree with you and I typically don’t use my crease for reference like that. But I’ll be more aware if I am doing it next time I am on the ice with him.
Holy jesus it’s coach Nick
@The Puck Stops Here I used to play AA
@Rajbir gotcha, what level did you play at?
@The Puck Stops Here I used when I played a higher level but not anymore.
Do you work with him?
Great timing with this video, Sam. I've been struggling with a toaster glove lately myself. Thought it was only because I'm struggling to work it in fully still, but it could also be where I'm holding it when I'm trying to make saves. Lots of good info there. Thanks!
Yeah, I never put 2 and 2 together but it makes so much sense when someone points it out.
Hey Sam, just wanted to say you've been a big Inspiration for me to get back on the ice and play again!
That’s amazing to hear Casey! I’m excited for you 👍
To be honest, I had no idea how much of a difference edge work was needed and the reason why he asked you to sharpen your skates. A lot of my past comments have been about your rebound control and those loose pucks; but DANG! What a huge difference it was when you put more focus on the edge work. It was explosive and your reaction to saving pucks resulted into better control of those pucks. Those C-cuts definitely looked like a huge improvement. Can't wait to see you put this altogether in a game and show off the new stuff!
Me too! Super excited to continue to work with Nick and to see how it effects my game when I start playing again. Hopefully sooner then later but for now, I’m going to focus on getting as much time with Nick as possible.
I hate the fact that it seems what I really need to do to get better can't be done alone. I need a guy shooting the pucks or even better, a coach... I mean, I'm going to try to set up a ball cannon or something. Maybe VR, I don't know. But it seems at some point I just have to ask somebody to help out.
To be honest, you are right. As much as I analyze my goals against, there are a lot time’s I make a save but I give out a bad rebound or don’t control it properly and I would only learn from it if an experienced coach pointed it out. It all comes down to whether or not you want to get better and if you do, a coach will help you 10x faster then trying to learn on your own especially if you do not know what you are looking for.
Man, this is a great video. So many little details explained here that as a beer leaguer I would have never picked up. Thanks for posting!
That’s exactly why I was so excited to get some time with Nick! Can’t wait to do it again.
Super interesting! Just the advice on how to properly capture the puck with the glove, in front, for me it will be to put into practice. I catch the puck often parallel to me and without even looking.
Yeah, it’s a slight tweak that will make a huge impact in our games!
I always thought having you gloves in front of you would help to track pucks better. My coaches thought it was a dumb idea and my catcher suffered as a child. After a 25 year hiatus, I get the opportunity to relearn everything and that has been one small change.
Yeah, goaltending has changed a lot in the last 25 years so that advice is outdated for sure. I’m sorry to hear that your glove suffered because of bad coaching. That’s never good.
yes do a mask
They are now available here: tpshstore.com/facemask
I like this guy. Seems pretty knowledgeable and simple on ice, sweet video sam
Hey trav what’s up I just came for your video
yo my two fav goalies talking. NO WAY!!!!!
Yeah. He is good, can’t wait to get out there again with him.
I’ve been to Sam’s apartment"......... just saying
Haha, yes you have!
Don’t worry man. For me, you’re the elite goalie
Haha, I appreciate that but give me some time and I’ll actually be an elite goalie.
I want mask
They are now available here: tpshstore.com/facemask
Yes I would want a mask
They are now available here: tpshstore.com/facemask
I wish I had a goalie coach like him when I played. Everything he said and showed you made so much sense. Everything you learned from him can only improve your game
100% and I loved that he showed me the basics and made sure I got it right before going forward. Rather then trying to just get through the drill. It was a great session.
Are you gonna continue with the goalie lessons sam?
Yes, I hope to get out with Nick a lot more especially now since my season is on hold.
dude an elite goalie looks like he is in time laps
@Daniel Nelson his name is Sal. I put his name on the video when he showed the drill.
Who was the other goalie?
Yeah he moves fast and is really good positionally!
I’m gassed just watching this 😅
@The Puck Stops Here yeah id be a dead guy after all that
And you didn’t even get to see the full 50 minutes session. We started with like 10 minutes of skating lol
Who would you say is better, Trav or this guy Sal? Nothing against Trav but I think Sal would certainly be on a similar level already if not a higher level.
@Big daddy Fort nite man see I originally thought so too, but Sal is smaller which means he absolutely has to move/skate better to compete with Trav, which is what looks so good in this video, his buttery movement. But Trav is still getting better too, the Swedish game is tweaking his style in the right ways. Sam is incredibly lucky to have skated with both guys, that's the only thing I'm sure of right now.
@Clark C sal is better 100% but I still love trav4
@The Puck Stops Here good call, I'm seeing that Sal wasn't exactly starting for Morrisville either. And who can say that holding a bench spot on a D3 team is going to ultimately lead to more success than the route that Trav is taking. Now I'm gonna have to keep an eye on both of those guys to see how they end up.
Sal just got back from playing NCAA D3 hockey for Morrisville State so I’m not sure if he is better as I’ve only skated with him the one time but they have different styles for sure.
Now that's a real training
Yes it was! I learnt so much!
You seem such a positive person man thats amazing. Love the content also
Thanks, I always try to be positive because that’s how we move forward. Negativity usually keeps people at a stand still or moving backwards.
Yes mask would be so cool
Goalie coaches are really life changing. I was lucky enough to have access to one in high school as well as ice time 4 times a week, I started off as a B or A level goalie. By the end of my high school career I was a starter in Div1 Varsity as well as playing AAA Midget. Watching videos also helps but that physical coaching is life changing.
@The Puck Stops Here I'll be here watching! Love content like this. Makes me miss my playing days.
Couldn’t agree more. I can’t wait to get on the ice with Nick again to continue developing my footwork and skating as well as practicing simple save selections and movements to to reduce the amount of energy used throughout the game.
Also yes the main skill gap in goaltending is skating and fitness. Goalies that are great with their edges and skating as well as their conditioning are basically set to be elite goalies.
So the one thing that really improved my kids game catching the puck is this. Every single drill we do is with his glove on. We noticed when he caught things bare handed that’s actually the palm of his glove. Once we made that change his glove is like a vacuum. Just my thoughts. Great job and nice workout.
I agree that is a great idea, for the warmup it was more designed to get my chin activated and to just get going. But I agree, if I was doing this as a drill then I would also use my glove. 👍
I also wouldn’t mind seeing a longer video with just more i guess. Also watching the other guy is so satisfying.
Yeah, I wish I had another camera just on him to watch after the practice. Perhaps next time I will.
I have the same issue with catching the puck slightly behind me. I have to keep telling myself to keep my glove out in front!
Yeah, it’s a habit we must work on to make it become consistent.
I might get a mask, but I would rather something simple.
Like in terms of design?
I loved this video! I was unsure at first because it wasn’t your normal groove, but as someone who’s never really been on the ice with a goalie coach I found this both entertaining and very educational. It was entertaining in that it’s hockey so that’s obvious, it was educational in that he went over small basic changes that as a beginner myself found made a world of a difference, and it was also very funny. I laughed out loud when the coffin dance thing came up and when you were explaining in short breath the difference between beer league and elite goalies. I hope you do more things like this, thank you Sam!
I’m glad that you liked it and I will be doing more of these videos with Nick especially now that my current winter season is on hold. So hit that notification bell so you don’t miss them 👍
Hey man. Great job out there. It would be cool to meet you. I'm going to be in Toronto of work on Monday and Tuesday (October 26-27).
Thank you and yeah, let me know if you do 👍
@The Puck Stops Here no worries man! I'm coming in from Ottawa. I'm sure I'll be back in T.O. before I know it. Have an amazing 7 year anniversary!
Ah no way, I’m actually going away that week to celebrate 7 years with my girlfriend. It would have been cool to meet up. Where are you coming from?
mask yes
@The Puck Stops Here also, GREAT video! I gotta find a goalie coach.....
Cool 👍
those mask would be sick
Cool 👍
Hey man what's up just watched your video great video looks like your learning a lot and yes I would buy a mask
Learned so much. I was happy to film it as I could watch it over and over. Lots to take away. And good to know about the mask. 👍
I concur
11:24 there’s my car in the back I was on with him and sal next
Nice! How did your session go?
hello sam
OMG you replied
Hey!
You work really hard, good job!
Thank you! And you need to if you want to get better! 😉
Not even gonna lie, I went to bed one day woke up the next morning and then it all clicked and my glove got really good quick. It just takes a lot of practice! Now I gotta work on my blocker a bit because I’m getting beat short side every time.
@The Puck Stops Here maybe it will you never know
I hope that happens to me tonight haha. But yes I agree, it does take a lot of practice which I need to get more of. 👍
