    • I am no expert, but I predicted Khabib would exploit Justin's leg kicks for take downs. BUT, I did not expect such impressive striking game. Game plan was perfectly tailored to Justin. Knees, kicks up the middle, step in uppercuts predicted well that JG would instinctively lower head and drop down. Closing the distance & keeping him on the back foot was also imperative. Also, big credit must go to Javier Mendez as well! Or as I like to call him Javier "Kane Velasquez style" Mendez. Khabib's execution of the plan & performance were nearly perfect. Objectively, he should have completed the arm bar at end of 1st round.

Either Khabib is just getting better and better over the years or the competition is just getting weaker. If that's the case, does it mean that Al Iaquinta is the real gangsta of them all? Hmn, makes me wonder.

  • This was great thank you for this breakdown. I will say, Khabib stood toe to toe with Justin, one of the more notorious strikers, and took a few good shots from Justin and just shrugged them off. Literally, you can see his shoulders shrug with his hands open facing up like as if he were saying, "that's it? that's all you got" and then we got to see Justin Gaethje on the run. Had Justin been fighting anyone else, I would have bet on Justin. But I knew Khabib's level of wrestling made Justin's level of wrestling look like elementary children at lunch recess. Khabib is a master, his wrestling skills are something all American wrestlers have never seen before. It just doesn't compare. We have seen Khabib eat some big punches and still control every aspect of each fight. He is a living legend.

  • I just wanna remind everyone: • Gaethje was Khabib’s toughest matchup stylistically, and ended up being his toughest fight - and it still only lasted 6 minutes. • Khabib not only out-struck Conor (the greatest striker in the world except for Adesanya), he did not take any big shots from Conor. • Khabib also absolutely dominated Iaquinta (someone known for their boxing) with boxing. • Khabib broke the record for most takedowns landed in a fight (21), and he did it against a 4 Time All American Wrestler, and he did it in a 3 round fight. • He dominated and finished Poirier (who has beat prime Holloway, Gaethje, Pettis, & Alvarez), dominated Dos Anjos (a former champ), dominated Barboza, and dominated Johnson. • He never lost a fight. • He dominated every elite fighter he faced, never having a close fight. • He lost, at the absolute most, 3 rounds in his entire career; and in none of those rounds was he dominated. • He was never in trouble, never hurt, never stunned, and never cut. • He did all of that in the most stacked division there has ever been in the history of MMA. And on top of all of that - he never tested positive for PEDs.

  • Nurmagomedov's punching technique is not text book, but he has combos, knows how to defend, overall not a bad striker. In the first round I was thinking "Khabib has to use the single to change to a double, he can't finish this on Gaethje". And this is what he did. Nurmagomedov is sooo quick, too. He thinks on a different speed!

    CharlesOffdensenCharlesOffdensenUukausi sitten
  • I wonder if, at the moment Khabib got the double and Gaethje drops his weight, I wonder if instead of Justin grabbing the waist of Khabib, if he put his forearm on Khabibs face and tried to continue the sprawl, I wonder if it would've helped? It at least would've prevented Khabib from taking the back as fast as he did. I'm almost certain Khabib would've be able to complete the takedown, but it at least would've put him in a "better" position than he did. It would've blocked Khabib from rotating to the back so fast.

Retro Active 23Retro Active 23Uukausi sitten
  • Luke Thomas is also genius who has sight to recognize genius of khabib...Amazing breakdown..Khabib is so technically sound and highly skilled, he understood sprawl patterns of justin in just 2 attempts and make adjustments so well and quickly that justin couldn't even imagine...Hands down to skills level.

  • Luke, excellent content as always. Been following recently only from your podcast, a friend recommended it and I've been a constant listener. On the 41:00 mark of the video on the matter of Khabib sitting back and "expecting" Justin to sit up, I thought Justin had no choice but to sit up because Khabib had Justin's right arm trapped. If Khabib sits back with that, wouldn't Justin's elbow will feel the pressure hence forcing Justin to sit up to relieve that pressure? Keep up the good work! I was captivated the whole video runtime.

I hate to say only Conor was trying to do something against him.. With all respect all of his opponents were try not to lose.. And 1 more thing puts him top of the food chain his pressure.. • He wasn't forcing "speed chess"he was simply putting the pressure on which doesn't allow the opponent to get set. This same strategy is used in ALL sports, example i play Defense in hockey and my biggest challenge is a player who really hounds me,keeps the heat on.Same thing in Football, you put pressure on the Quarterback for a reason.Khabib never fights within kicking range,he either stays out or moves in.Most of the real bad fighters in the UFC stand right in that kicking range which is also out of your striking range,so it is a stupid distance to fight at. I personally thought Justin did not look like a guy who wrestled, maybe he is just that rusty. The first thing yo udo is put pressure on the head but Justin was just trying to run which puts himself off balance.

  • I give them credit where it's due but it's the UFC's marketing genius that cripples a lot of opponents. Iseen it happen countless times with Fighters that get built up to Legendary status the opponent comes in and basically fights their fight for them. Look at how fearful gaethje was, he was moving really fast to get away and that was all that was on his mind as soon as the bell rung. Everyone thinks I'm a Conor McGregor fan because of his Antics I'm a fan because of his fighting style look at how Connor faced him in their first fight he walks out like a G. That's why I want to see George St-Pierre fight khabib because I know George will shoot for the takedown I want to see khabib taken down.
