  • Apple has screwed up the further development of the Power PC processors. - That's why they switched to Intel.

  • M1 only 10 Watt and has 1700+ single core score on geekbench and 8000 multi core score. The single core beat single core score of most powerfull dekstop cpu today (ryzen 5950x) and the multicore beat ryzen U series with 15 Watt tdp.

  • Have they considered adding a new instruction set? That seems to be the shortsighted cheep trick that got them in this mess. When they should be moving from CISC to RISC they seem to be designing a new more complex version of CISC. I’m calling it Very Complex Instruction Set Computer or VCISC.

  • Apple likely always knew that they can do it better - most of the issues with the recent MacBook line-up all came from Intels bad heat management. And boy, is their M1 a revolution in thermal design - you can put that guy under 4K rendering load and it doesn't even sweat. Personally I am excited for what's in store for the first Apple Silicon iMac - this thing will be a beast.

  • ARM is good for battery life, performance in specific tasks because it has hardware accelerators. But that is also its Achilles heel if any standard in accelerated tasks changes every slightest processor became useless. Try to watch a h265 video on arm without hardware support. It is impossible, contrary to that now I watch h265, vp9 videos on CPU 9 years old without any problems. When you buy an ARM device at the start everything will be rosy and fast but you will witness performance degradation very soon. That is good for manufacturers and bad for consumers. You must not think that I'm against accelerators but raw CPU power must be enough to bypass at least one future standard change.

  • I started my career at a time when I thought Intel was completely untouchable. Then came AMD, followed by ARM, tiny companies that chugged away and said, “yes we can”. Now intel just looks foolish. Stuck with its old time friend, “Windows” and relying on the victories of the past. What a sad day for them - poor leadership.

  • Um, the G5 was never in the Cube. That thing had a G4 and was scrapped only a year later due to low sales. It also didn't overheat because the G4 wasn't a hot processor and so convection cooling worked well on it. Why are you making stuff up? This guy honestly doesn't know Apple history or have experience. Well, it's obvious since he's clearly an Android/Google fanboy from his videos.

  • This history should start with Motorola which, made all the processor chips for mac computers until they could not get a version of their G4 processor to operate at 3.0 GHz. The G5 processor made by IBM was not designed to be placed inside of a Personal Computer (PC), it was for use inside of devices for factories. So, Apple found themselves in a bit of a jam with having to continue to use Motorola's G4 processors for laptop computers and using the higher heat generating G5 processors from IBM for both their tower and iMac desktop systems.

  • Apple has an on again off again relationship with Intel. Arms performance and core count WAS subpar to any of Intel's offerings. Intel five year hiatus on x86 development allowed arm to make strides into servers, and CPU's. Intel now needs to do a Lisa Su moment, go big or get out methodology. Chiplet's are the future not bigger monolithic dies, but i'm sure there somewhere is a happy medium. They should have invested in their engineering and research dept's developing low scale one off products to see if some new technology can leapfrog you.

  • My wife was morally opposed to the Intel transition and I'm starting to think she was right. All of a sudden we became preoccupied with clock speeds and 'thermal issues.' People are still asking about these things as the new Apple Silicon is introduced, but bad habits die hard. We just don't have to think like that anymore. x86 is dead, and Intel is doomed if they can't get that through their heads. (Ha! "Intel is doomed…" My how the tables have turned.)

  • Great video! Let me add a little piece of information. When making the ipad Apple took Intel Atom chips into consideration (the ones that had been powering netbooks), but in the end they decided to go on with Samsung but named the chip A(pple)4. 2 years later they ditched Samsung and ARM CPUs (Cortex) and made their own custom chip, the A6(X). From then on it’s been getting better and better till the current M1 (equivalent of an A14X). Meanwhile Intel managed to sell their new Atom chips (clovertrail) to the Android tablets that started appearting after the iPad and to the first Windows 8 OEMs in 2012, while Microsoft went with Nvidia and their ARM Tegra chip for their surface RT.....

  • Kudos to apple. I run a mixed shop & I'm all for competition. Intel got too complacent and spent more time figuring how to dumb down it's silicon to promote different layers of capability than innovating. It's always the story with big corporations with $$ as the bottom line, they end up killing the golden goose. Apple lost it's mojo for several years and has come roaring back in the last couple. Now if it can get it's buggy software under control, it should be looking at smooth sailing for a significant period of time.

A company going downhill for sure. I read it couple of years ago when Intel announced that it was going to cut on R&D and spend their profit on share buybacks and marketing. This shows the short sightedness of upper management. AMD also took a huge U-turn under Lisa and become real competitor to Intel.

    kazuki nakamurakazuki nakamura2 kuukautta sitten
    • @kazuki nakamura Poach means to trespass on (Private property), especially for hunting or fishing. It suggests that the engineers did not leave of their own free will. Your response suggests that you are unaware of the HW cycles and construction. The M1 is in units being shipped. That means it has been though all the SW testing (about a year) and HW testing (about a year). It is only 2020, so no a 2019 hire would not be involved in the design.

      Jonathan JohnsonJonathan Johnson2 kuukautta sitten
    • @Jonathan Johnson how did you make that conclusion? Where did I say chip designers are like mindless drones? Apple has been growing their chip design capabilities aggressively since 2010. It’s not just for M1. It’s for a lot of different chips. The reason why they were poaching Broadcom engineers since 2012 was for Wi-Fi + Bluetooth. And yes you can leverage engineers hired in 2019 to help with M1. They obvi didn’t architect it, but there are plenty of jobs to do before M1 production silicon.

      kazuki nakamurakazuki nakamura2 kuukautta sitten
    • @kazuki nakamura How long do you think it take to make a processor? Anyone acquired in 2019 has nothing to do with the present designs. That would be a massive turnover--like working all day everyday. I don't work there anymore, but you should already know that the Broadcom employees are for the network chip designs and the same would go for the 5G modems because Broadcom is heavy handed with its licensing. Every company can be blamed for poaching or you could say that no engineer wants to do the same design for the rest of their life. You make it sound like we are mindless drones or like we owe that company something for giving us the privilege of working for them.

      Jonathan JohnsonJonathan Johnson2 kuukautta sitten
    • @Jonathan Johnson 2004 was way too early. I'm definitely not talking about 2004 or before 2010. Apple didn't do any exciting chips back then. The first exciting chip was the A4. Since then, Apple has been poaching a lot of chip designers from silicon valley. Especially since the 2012 time frame. They took so many employees from Broadcom that Broadcom threatened to sue. In 2019 they took 2200 Intel chip designers as part of the 5G modem acquisition. Another 300 chip designers from the Dialog acquisition before that.

      kazuki nakamurakazuki nakamura2 kuukautta sitten
    • Hi, I had considered transferring to one of the Apple chip design positions back in 2004, and at that time I don't remember hearing that anyone from intel had applied. The architecture is not the same, so there is no reason to believe that anyone on the team came from intel.

    Sudeepta GhoshSudeepta Ghosh2 kuukautta sitten
  • This is the all too common story of a company becoming stuck in its ways. I don't understand why so many of them do it. They become so short sighted, so quarterly driven. They do it to themselves. The exact same thing is happening in the auto industry right now. Want to know which giant brands will still be around in 20-30 years? See which ones are investing all their resources in EV's, self driving, and battery tech. Its actually not very many.

    Casey CCasey C2 kuukautta sitten
    • Indeed. No idea where they came up with that crap. I was working as a Mac consultant when the G4 cube came out, and I can tell you, the SOLE reason Apple didn’t sell a lot more cubes was the cost: customers almost invariably chose not to spend the couple of hundred bucks price premium for the cube compared to a similarly specced G4 tower. The only people who got them were executives and receptionists, since companies thought it looked hip to have those up front. Had the cube cost the same as the tower, it would have sold like hotcakes. Pity, since it is truly a gorgeous design.
