A simple off grid homestead. Built from the ground up with your own hands. Thats the dream for thousands of people around the world. But, with cable TV programs and made up youtube videos, what does that look like in reality. In this video , my wife Brooke and I show the process of building an off grid homestead , start to finish, and what its actually like. Thanks for watching.
Portions of this video were provided by my wife's footage that you can see on her channel ( Girl in the Woods)....here's a link to her channel.

Maybe no rent, but still have to pay taxes on any structure you build.
Everyone of these aww shucks off grid types building flawless homes...every single time. You guys wouldn't happen to have any carpentry experience, would you? :-) They all just figure it out. Sponsored by...
Thank you so much, I learned a few things from this video, but your explanations of what are needs really are in life is very true. I'm looking to build a cabin for me my wife and my son for the same reason you mention this was truly a very educational video. Life is turned upside down lately and I believe in this option of living. Thanks for this amazing video and God bless you and your lovely wife.
That was awesome!
Between the frost heaving and the log shrinkage thats a hell of a bouncy shack you got going. Great way to squander a/an= trust fund, insurance claim, inheritance ect. But whatever, I grew up in rural Alaska and played in several abandoned "homesteads" with the original owners happy and safe back in their parents California basement. Thanks for that. Another generation of Alaska kids will play in yours. Before they join the Army to get the fuck out of that state and never go back!
Hooray for you and Brooke for showing how it is to really build a cabin, God Bless you and Brooke and Thanks for a real look at life in the off grid !!!
Wow, that's awesome! Excellent work.
I am Irish in Spain, moving back to West of Ireland soon for my beautiful green country, love what you do and your wife/partner she is amazing, especially the upcycling of the things like from the dump or from your own home, upcycle and reuse. Ye are both very talented and hardworking. Inspiration to everyone for lots of their own ideas. Where your living is stunning. Well done keep it up.
Maybe someone watching this video will donate a water heater for you.
You’re like Bob Ross but for building 💜 amazing 💕💕
No! You will stay in the city!! You will stay with the mob and learn your new pronouns!! You will worship your new savior lord biden. You will work as a slave, not own property and be happy!! Bwahahahahahahahahaaaa!! (Just kidding, you're very bless to be out there, wish you the best)😎👍
Thanks for sharing. It’s really a good life. God bless you and your new life.
Don't homesteaders drink black coffee?
Good motivational commentary.
Your like the Bob Ross of Carpentry.
18:46 I disagree. While I do believe anyone can learn the basics of anything, there are levels of experience, skill, and knowledge that a “regular Joe” would not reach or have right of the bat. I wouldn’t hire a musician to fly a commercial airplane or a pilot playing Flight of the Bumblebee on the piano. To you, it’s only a matter of what you need and what you don’t need to build a basic wood cabin.
How do you keep meat cold/refrigerated in a build like this ? Want to build my own someday soon and am wondering about this
One word for this guy.......respect.
Interesting movie. However you need funds to purchase the property and enough skills to put a homestead..
Really feel better to see ur style

Absolutely A Beautiful Job That You And Your Family Can Enjoy And Be Proud Of. Great Video, Respect From Niagara Falls Ontario Canada And Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia Canada. God Bless.
That's how I built my house in Kingston Springs Tennessee.. about 90% by myself. Just take it slow and easy don't get in a rush that's when you will get hurt. And common sense and logic.. from Mark.. Save your money
Just tripped over this on youtube , glad I did . Thanks for the video . Great work .
You the man I attack all my projects thanks for reminding us that we are all creative and can build whatever you set your mind to it
as great as this sounds this will get a lot of the people in the us who decide to build in the woods into some serious legal trouble.
He seems to forget that you still have to pay taxes on any structure you build.

The two of you did an awsome job.
I think the wood is so beautiful
Welcome home, simple rick
He should have used dirt first if he wanted it finished by dark
I love the simplicity of this video mainly because of how Dave narrates it. I love watching both his and Brooke's videos because they encourage people to get out and make things of their own. In places like these when a tornado or ice storm knocks out power and you can't see or get cool or warm, houses and land like this is a comfort because you aren't dependant on when the power lines are going to be restored.
NEW FAN! Good living. My aunt never had indoor plumbing. Our home received a grant for indoor plumbing in 2011. Our home was built in 1912
I simply could never✋🤭
Thank you 🙏🥰💕
why do you say roof like that, puts me off for some reason
You're an inspiration! But I'm sure you've heard that before!
I tell ya what, you are a heck of a likable fellow and I appreciate your philosophies and can do attitude. So glad I stumbled upon your channel! Thank you for sharing your stories and hard work!
Very good bro... I really enjoy the built....but why shower so far and the toilet...???
The known digestion coincidingly hum because jail currently puncture pro a frightened frightening full fumbling functional turret. heady, orange eggnog
So good 🙌
The best parts are falling off the roof and when bears and Bigfoot come around.
Good for the homeless shelter
I "gloutoned" your video and agree 100% with your comments. The only recommendation I have you should change to save propane. When you heat up the water you don't have to fill up the whole bucket with cold water. You only fill it up about 25% and when this is hot you add cold water so you will have the perfect temperature to shower. And I have a question: Do you melt snow to take showers during the winter month? Hope you are taking the time to send me a short hawler.
love you guys this is awesome!
I wonder how problematic are showers gonna be in the winter.
After years of being taught that 'real off griding' means no modern tools or supplies allowed your videos have shown me a saner way of happiness.
It's usually best to ignore extremism. Do what's easiest for you.
I was watching this video when I heard you say Fairbanks! I’m stationed here and I’m really interested in learning how to build so if you need help lmk!
Bravo good job bro!!!!
It’s my dream to have an off grid home. Thank you for sharing your families home once agin. It’s LOVELY 🧡. You and your wife work so well together. I’ve followed you through on all of your builds. And you are correct on the “true off-grid folks” the ones that claim to be look tore-up and exhausted. But more then anything they look like their not having any fun. The object of off grid is to surrender to time. Thank you 🙏
Awesomely awesome job man. Do you ever have any sightings of Bigfoot out there?
GOD BLESS YOU
Now THAT'S a woman. ♥
good man
Impressive.
that was cool
Your voice is so comforting lol. Congrats on your cabin
The hillbilly is alive and well. If you require quality, Hire a good guy
Offgrid peaceful living. This is my dream as well.

don't care about cabin building skills but how did you get the land to build it on?
Great video. I built a shed with wall frames and all. My father helped with the door. He's my Best Man. Great Man!
I love watching you and Brooke!
24:03 - Even harvested local marble trees for the counter top, aluminum trees for the sink and faucet, and swiss miss trees for the cocoa. Legend.
You wait until the Feds find that shit. They're going to knock it down and tax the shit out of you.
Hey Dude, you guys are fantastic! I wish I could find a wife that would work like yours does. They are hard to fine. Love turns a two people working crew to a great working crew. Great work !!!! I think I'll build me a cabin with hope of some build maid appearing out of the forest, hey anything is possible, right! good wishes.
You should add solar panels and a tesla power wall
This was a wonderful video and well dialogued. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us.
The next time I date a man, I'm going to show him this video. If he can't do any of this, or isn't willing to learn, I don't want him. Sorry, not sorry. 😂
I live in N. Jersey and pay rent. I've needed new flooring in my bathroom for years and have been unrewarded by fly-by-nights who have done a horrible job with cheep junk from home depot. How bought traveling down with some of your dump bargains and doing some work!?!? Okay, just teasing, but you are very talented. and do fabulous work!! Your wife is lucky to have you. :)
Why did you go vertical instead of horizontal on logs maybe you said and we missed it lol
Building lessons and LIFE lessons.
Taking "it ain't much but it's honest work" to the next level
the craziest part of this video is how did he build that in 35 min
Unless you are in Alaska that is pretty much hard to be close to towns ya know but most part I agree
A very nice vidio. I thank you very much.
I'm considering building kitchen cabinets in the house that I bought a year ago because, well I guess just because I can or at least I think I can . I have to admit with my own house rehab I'm currently on the fence so to speak with whether or not to try to bring my garage up to spec as far as permits and get it qualified as an additional dwelling unit which means the square footage adds to the value of the property versus just trying to Airbnb it. Although it's easy to romanticize a life out in the woods like that and I don't exactly identify as a city slicker part of me thinks I just wouldn't feel comfortable, I do like being in nature and I enjoy working with my hands and I definitely don't love all the dogs and helicopters and sirens and idiots I have to deal with in the city everyday but it's a much slower life out in the country and I'm a little bit of a fast paced person, especially living in California my whole life which doesn't really help
I just finished a 10-hour day at work and I'm getting tired watching you work but your commentary is so wholesome I had to watch the whole video. I wonder if you were concerned about the snow on your shower structure and shed structure since you didn't use the steep roof pitch, maybe it's not a big deal cuz they're smaller roofs and you can kind of just rope drag the snow off it aside from that my only other thought was that the rough plywood on the drawers in the kitchen cabinets might be a little difficult to clean but you could buy a couple dollars worth of drawer liners to solve that pretty easily. I remember a real estate investor once told me that his favorite thing to do at networking events is listen to people tell him what can't be done which he found a specialty humorous if it was something he had done or was currently doing. Point is talk's cheap and the proof is in the pudding and your mountainside cabin looks quite wonderful and extremely functional and of course was very affordable so triple win buddy 😁😁😁
roof not ruf
All glory to Jehovah the great very good job building this house!!!
You're a living legend bro. Thank you for showing all of us this IS possible.

What helps shrinking logs from swimming in cold water?
Wonder how he uploads video, how to power a computer for editing, etc. I suppose a generator would take care of the latter, but the former requires a pretty fast internet connect, especially when uploading a 35 minute 1080p video. There is Starlink now but not sure if it's availa le there yet, and that requires electricity as would any connection.
